stuffed dyna gearbox
I stuffed my dyna gearbox today in my hilux. Do you think i should rebuild the dyna box or replace it with a r151? Will the r151 bolt in where the dyna box was? or is there another option witch would be stronger? My hilux runs lockers Q78swampers and a v6
I got to ask if the Dyna box is the same as the G or the R where it bolts to the bell housing?
If not, rebuild the dyna box or consider how cheap the standard G is now and do a risk assessment on how often you will "blow" your gear box!
If it is the same as the R, you may find a cheap enough one. To rebuild any box at a shop with not getting mates rates is friggen heaps of money.

I'm the sharpest tool in the shed!
Not so as they are the same trans internally, except for the different gear ratios. The Dyna ia also an R series, ie R452.dow50r wrote:rebuild the dyna, the rbox is not as strong
The only strength difference if you can call it that is the Dyna has a cast case whereas the R150/151 are alloy but with a bash plate this means zip.
Yep, straight bolt up as they are the same breed of trans and you would have the better internal shifter selector mechanism rather than the crap outside setup used on the Dyna.mudbasher2 wrote:........ would this bolt into the same place as the dyna box? I would prefer this as the dyna box has a long gearshift throw ie changing from 1st to 2nd
Be aware the R150 has a 3.83 1st and the R151 has a 4.31 1st whereas your Dyna has a 5.14 so if you prefer the lower 1st then the R151 would be the closest.
.
I think some confusion has arisen here because there are more than one type of gearbox series fitted to the Dyna. The smaller Dyna's run 'R' series boxes, the bigger Dynas run 'M' series boxes (this is a pretty good simplification anyway).
The R boxes should be all pretty close to interchangable apart from ratios and whether the housing can take a transfer. M series boxes are a Titan of a gearbox, and are pretty much not interchangable (It can be done, but alot of work).

Wheeling on completely wicked angles, without even looking stable.

G'day mate, can I ask how you stuffed the box? Is it a Marks item? I'm running one in my lux with a V6 and so far haven't had any dramas. Just wondering if you know what the cause might have been. Cheers, Chris.
97 DC lux
ive been running the dyna box for about 4 years and it got a flogging(its a play car) the syncro on first and the thrust bearing let go and there was metal though the box, but in the end it was cheaper to rebuild the dana box then buy a r150 out of a hilux and i know its strong enough for a few more years. my v6 has a cam aftermarket ecu ect so it was probley a bit harder on the transmission
