Wearing Seatbelts Offroad?

Hey People

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are with wearing your belts while four wheel driving.

I personally always wear mine, unless travelling slowly over normal tracks.

This was sparked by a comment on another forums where is was said

'the first rule of 4wd is not to ware a selt belt because of in the case of a roll ova ur seat belt will lock in and you wont be able to get out' (No edit for spelling!)

I would think its better to hang in the air for a bit, the smash your head on something! And I have never known a seatbelt not to undo if your upside down, or on your side!!

i never used to wear one, but lately, i have been (probably cause i've seen 3 high-speed rollovers right in front of my eyes in the past 2 years)

Personally Im like u, I wear it all the time, except when going slow watching out the side window or something like that.

That's crazy :roll:

I was in a 3 roll 4x4 accident and the seat belt saved me from allot of injuries. However my wife did get some fractured ribs from the belt. But I am sure the injures would have been allot worse if we weren't wearing belts.

i wear mine all the time. i won't move unless all passengers are strapped in. i have a auto retractor belt which some times jams up on hills so i added an additional manual tension lap belt for those times. don't listen to that dumb fawkstick. but don't bother making him wear a belt offroad - darwinism will sort him out.

Always, wear it, always. I use a small metal bulldog clamp to prevent the belt from retracting when on angles etc.

Ditto the ditto....regardless of speed - If it's moving - I'm strapped....& so are my passengers........I don't like teeth marks in the dash or sterring wheel....

I wear it all the time, a zip tie or a clothes peg can be used to stop the belt retracting on hills and being unable to get it back on again, also stops it restricting you, just don't set it too loose.

What a load of frog shit. The retraction mechanism locks (which it is supposed to do) not the buckle catch.

Yep, always. I've been in two rollovers (was the driver in both :oops:

), and in both cases I honour the seltbelt in keeping me from falling out the window and under the rolling car.

That sh!t about the seat belt "locking in" is utter nonsense. In the second rollover the four of us were hanging upside down in the car from our seatbelts. None of us had any trouble getting the seat belt undone, and the only injuries were some seat belt bruises and sand in the eye.

I know this is one of those "friend of a friend" tales, and I'll be the last one to let a personal story dictate other's actions, but the point was driven home recently when a friend of my girlfriend's (and a close friend of her recently passed brother) was killed when he was thrown from a 4wd while 4wd'ing. She'll come down on you like an angry biatch if she sees you driving without a seat belt. Some folk in here already know that

Always wear a belt if i need to have a little extra movment with the belt on i will put the sholder strap so it runs under my arm not over the sholder ( i know its not the best but im still strapped in and it allows a bit more movement for trying to look out the side etc.
Also i either have my windows all the way open of all closed, saves on head injuries if your head is begin thrown about dont wanna slam your head into a half open windows at speed could have some ugly results

This is an interesting read as I recal when I was younger and My Parent started in the Toyota Landcruiser Club there original driver training that my father went to and for afew years aftre that they alway stated against wearing your seatbelts.......

Then after me and my father went on a hard/extreme club trip and the trip leader rolled his car backwards down a very large 45degree hill climb (car rolled about 6or7 times apparently) tossing his wife out the window and taking her around a full roll b4 leaving her with multiple fractures and busted ribs and unconsious etc etc (lets just say pretty farked up) while it rolled afew more times.
Amazingly he was ok but our two day trip became a three day trip full of panicing morons and me needing to do a shit on a muddy slope that wasnt enjoyable.

A helicopter had to be flown in to take the fellas wife (she recovered but was with walking supports for quiet sometime) while we all begun the recovery of the vehicle and the crap that had come out of it.

EVER SINSE THAT DAY THE CLUB CHANGED THERE SEATBELT RULE.....and i think it was very rightly so........
They even had a big meeting and report sent out to all members.

On river crossing shure you can have it off but anything thats not flat, bumpy, slightly angle or ANYTHING, a seatbelt will help keep you in the right position.

A seatbelt saved my life (well i say id did cause i wasnt even harmed) when my uncle rolled his discovery at about 80Km/h.........we were all ok (the car wasnt) luckily.
ALWAYS WERE A SEATBELT you never know when it will save your life ! ! !

Wouldn't this mean complete road rules apply?

Err.. i was under the impression that by law u have to wear a seatbelt at all times, unless you are reversing, so sure not all road rules are take into consideration, but if u have the brains to drive a car, wearing a seatbelt should be 2nd nature... i guess.

BUt as was sead, darwins theory of natural selection kicks in, and those with less desirable qualities die out in the community, hrm.... *starts writing list* :twisted:

Personally I always wear a seatbelt except when I am leaning out the window to see where my tyre is and then its lucky if i'm crawling at 3kph. Once wheel is right belt goes back on. Like other guys who have been out on comps/night runs and the like, I carry full pack of zipties and 100mph hour tape to prevent the autoretract from locking up.
The only problem I have is that someone let darwin award canditates into the same area to play in. Both my kids come with me and even they prefer to wear their seatbelts/harnesses.

I wear my belt offroad mainly because i don't like banging my head on the roof on rough tracks. :roll:

There are times i take it off like water crossings as Gonzo said & when crossing those very narrow cane train bridges. :shock:

people keep mentioning using shit to stop the seatbelt from locking on etc...

What happens if you need it to lock?? EG run off the side of a hill or something...?

May as well not be wearing it?
