What gearbox are you using?

With the H55f, the selector can become worn. When i put mine in L4, i have to then pull the lever back slightly to engage 4wd properly. Never had a problem with H4 :?

Selectable low range 2WD can be handy though :P

im not sure what gearbox it is, im assuming its standard issue for my truck. when L4 is selected it makes a grinding noise when u put load on it

Try wrenching back towards you on the transfer lever, see if it'll engage - might need to feather the clutch whilst doing this. Have you got a body lift? This could also be causing clearance issues (body->lever)
