Tb42 reliability

Post by muddymav »

Hey all, i am looking around for a new toy, i have only had experience with the diesel but i am seriously considering a petrol gq, i was thinking a tb42 with a little bit of work? supercharged? i am currently looking into getting a engine and rebuilding it ready for the car, the question i ask is, how reliable are these engines? i know the cylinder heads do have problems, but i am more concerned about the bottom end, cranks? rods? etc.
can the blocks handle extra horsepower? also ,what can i do with "waterproofing" the engine, i do a little bit of water and mud, and i just dont want to stop half in the middle of a puddle! i understand it aint a diesel, so im not going swimming or anything!

what recomendations do you have? with mods? lpg vs pulp? supercharged vs turbo, and just some of your thoughts on the engine, thanks in advance!

Mines just a stock carbi with a snorkle.
Siliconed up the dizzy.
It LOVES water. No problem.

Has also been very reliable over 6 years. Has not blown a head (yet).
It runs duel fuel, I have to say it is a slug on gas. Not to bad on petrol.
Cant give any info on modified tb42's, But strait gas turbo is popular.
Cheers

Yep, the TB42 thinks it's a diesel and never stops.
This is not legal advice.

sorry kinda open ended statement, what i mean is, maintain them :) that way you can thrash the shit out of it in the bush and itll still run like brand new, i know mine loves the rev limiter ;)

i had a TB42 on LPG before i got my TD42.

It was a fantastic engine, but the heads on them tend to crack around 250-260,000 K's around the no.6 cylinder, bit of a problem with them, EFI heads were a bit better.

apart from that, bottom end is perfect, had 300,000K's on mine before i rolled her, she still started like brand new, had a beautiful hum to her and went off the mark real hard, was a good setup, wish i didn't roll her but i am happy with a TD42, just not happy with the price of fuel for her

Yeah mines done over 400k , I've had it for a few years now and going by all reciepts I got with the car, motor's never been change or rebuilt, and
still going pretty hard .Even though I've cooked 3-4 times , but now chopping it into a dual cab and putting in a V8....did also run pretty cheap
to, got about 600 - 650 k's on a tank , depending on how much loud pedal
was applied...

I sold my SWB GQ on gas last year with 389,000 kms on it and the TB42 engine in it had no signs of dying what so ever.

With TB42 engines, fix the head properly and convert it to electronic ignition (if carby) and youll have a strong workhorse of an engine.
