trailer and 4x4 under 2 ton
The missies has just bought a new van capable of pulling two ton.
What trailer and 4x4 do you think could be pulled.
I was thinking of a Hilux, navara or a suzuki sierra.
Possible ? Or just going to weigh too much.

To tow 2000kg, you need several things.
a tow bar capable of towing 2000+ Kg, go higher than you need. say 2300kg.
trailer will need to have 2 or more axels and a breaking system. electric or mechanical brakes. if electrical then the cra need to get fitted with an electric brake unit.
In NSW up to 2000 Kg this is sufficient. over 2000 Kg you need a break away brake system. big $$$, plus its classed as a heavy vehicle and needs a yearly safety inspection.
as for abll weight, any 2000+ Kg tow bar will have a suitable ball weight. check with a reputible place to find your car and your tow bars limit for ball weight.
Then position the vehicle on the trailer to adjust how much ball weight there is. Weight must be forward of the axel but not so that your car looks stupidly low in the back and high in the front, or your steering is shot.
As for the vehicle it will have to be pretty small, I dont think you will get a hilux on there. most trailers will be around 600Kg so your looking at under 1400kg dry weight.
then remember not to have it full of 100L of fuel etc unless you have enought room to move.

Weight Distrubutions Hitches dont change the ball weight carring capacity.ozy1 wrote:If ball weight is low., surely you could fit a weight disstribution hitch. Would that be safe,
They just help with the stability of towing.
If its a Ford ( THATS ANY FORD ) and its over 1600kg you MUST have a weight distrubution hitch other wise your towbar is only rated at 1600kg.
This is as per fords specs.

I get customers telling me all day every day,
" I have a heavy duty towbar so the ball weight must be ok !"
This is wrong, The rating of the ball weight is not governed by the overall towbar rating.
EG - Subaru Forester, 1300kg Rated towbar, 70kg ball weight
- VW T5, 2000kg Rated Towbar, 95 kg Ball Weight.
PLEASE, Anyone towing any sort of trailer check what the Ratings and ball weights of your vehicle. Over loading will cause accidents.

The van Vw t4 transporter. The guy built it and spent a lot of money and equipped the van to tow his caravan. Then realised the caravan was 2200kg and rated towing of the van 2000kg. So his loss our gain. The brake controller is in place. So should just be a mater of hooking up the trailer. Will get it checked out first just to avoid insurance and law problems.
Was playing with the idea of building a serious off roader that i could trailer around. Rather than trying to keep the patrol legal. Sell the patrol to fund the project.

I said any set up for 2 tonnes is capapble of towing 2 tonnes, just make sure your tow bar is up to it, and check to find out what ball weight it can handle.CWBYUP wrote:WRONG WRONG WRONG.thehanko wrote: as for abll weight, any 2000+ Kg tow bar will have a suitable ball weight.

The ball weight is the down force from a stationary trailer at the tow point? yes / no?
As I said the amount of ball weight is effected by the positioning of the load on the trailer, which effects how much weight is on the axels and how much is on the ball.
I also mentioned that he should keep within the limits or have it over engineered to keep safe.

towing
correct you are , best to check manufactures specs on ball weights if you dont know then try to keep it between 75-150 kg max when fully loaded, meaning your trailer and load must not exceed your towing capacity. Your trailer will weight will be about 400 to 600 kgs pending on who builds it, so your loaded vehicle should balance up the remaining weight 1600 to 1400 kgs etc. Electric brakes are my choice if its a regular or long distance tow its a little moe expensive but well worth it if the little lady is sharing the drive, electric brake are about 380 each use two not one trust me and your car controlers are about 200 then probably another 250 to install bt your local auto elect,if you take your trailer off road or uneven ground use rocker suspension NOT SLIPPING LEAF, as load contact to the ground will be even at all times and not colapse your suspension its not that much more expensive. All you need is a bath scale and a piece of tube under the hitch and that will measure your ball weight good enough. IF YOU MUST DO IT ONCE DO IT RIGHT AND YOU`LL ENJOY IT MORE. cheers steve. call up the company who made the vehicle also, they might have changed the ball down rating
for example:
the Jackaroo 92+
in the manual is says "2500kg towing capacity, 100 or 120kg ball down weight"
in 2003, Holden updated the balldown weight if you increased the loadrating of your shocks and rear springs, if you do this, you can get a letter from Holden stating that the Balldown weight has been revised and is now 250kg's

Good luck ! The T4 is everything but a good tow vehicle. Believe me, I've been thru several T4's with different engines from the 2.4 gasser up to the 150hp TDI and all were lousy tow rigs. No power, front wheel drive with always spinning wheels as soon as it gets wet or loose gravel. The clutch is not made for towing at all and the front drive shafts tend to wear extremely fast.
The max I would tow with a T4 is a Zook on a lightweight trailer.
