I'm following this closely cause I'm about to do the same to my 40 in a month or two ... starting to source parts in the next few weeks etc...

Out of curiosity... what is it about the 75 column that you don't like?
They look like crap. As they dont match anything inside. Or come close with lining up with the dash at all. And this makes them look really unfinished.
The 55 columns are still out there. I bought one from Ipswich spare parts the other day for $40 for my 45 when i get around to the conversion. Although i think i will shorten the column before i install it. In a 45 Ute the extra 3" in length will be a PITA.

X2,
and also the indercator stalk is 75, so you need to mess around with the wiring...
Nice gq swb ute chop with a huffer for the good times
Yeah, my 75 series looks like shit....I hate it! and still dont know how I will get it to look half decent.
I originally planned to wire up all the 75 series indicator stalks etc. but just modified the std. 40 series one to fit for now.
Heres a pic of how sh!t it looks. Cause the std. 75 series plastics only cover the top 150mm the bottom of all the column remains exposed. Am thinking of getting Komited Kustoms to fold up a sheet metal surround for it and seeing how that looks. But would probably be better off spending the $$ to get a 55 series one working in mine.

On my latest one I came through much higher on the firewall, and through the centre of your dash cut-out... moved the whole column on much less angle and higher up.... Hard to explain, but looks heaps neater, had to move the speedo over to the centre of the dash. no pics :(

bj on roids wrote:Thats what I thought, then why bother with it? has headlights on column i suppose?
Why not just stick with the 40 series column.
There is a 40 on youtube which has the PIMPenest 100 series interior, including steering wheel and engine
Because the 40 series column has no support bearing in the bottom of the shaft and also there is no way to attach a uni joint to it as it has no spline on the end. Only a set of ears to attach a rag joint which you do not want when doing the 60 series power steer conversion.
The 55 column has both the bearing and spline and it still looks like a stock 40 column except its approx 3" longer which most people would never notice.
Here is a 40 series in Pakistan with a 70 series dash fitted-

easier to use a 55 series column than get a bearing pressed onto the bottom of the 40 column.
You can use a bush or bearing and run it inside the main shaft... and then bolt a steel plate to the bottom of the colum and use the uni join thing off a feroza... plenty of options
I am also aware of a 55 that still has a steering column at the wreckers @ boundry Rd wacol (sorry dont have a name or number)..
They had a all you can carry day for $50 (or something) and I noticed there was a 55 in their yard that still had a steering column.. didnt grab it though .. so if anyone in brissy wants it.. go for it. (Twisty, if your interested let me know. I could go grab it for you).
The mod i done to my 55ser s/column worked well i got a 47ser 1 with steering lock machined the sleeve off then machine a male and female ends onto the shortened 55 shaft welded it back together !/ this type of butt joint gives u the best strenght n penertration wit a good hot weld rotatin the shaft i was lucky had access to a w/shop with a lathe used for t/shafts and machined it down again repostioned the sleeve over the welded part and welded it on this keeps the shaft strenght n no1 would know any different.
Another 1 I did for a guy he paid a gear n spline machine shop to shorten the steering wheel end to the lenght of an original 45ser shaft.
Both ways needs the outer tube to be shortened also but that is the easy part.
I'm not stuck I'm over here!
Watch where you driven!!!

This column is now gone. I was in there today and someone has allready got it. If anyone is still after one i found 2 more elsewhere today. One is totally complete and the other is missing the shrouds. If you are after one PM me and i will let you know where they are.
Picture doesn't show it real well, but do you think a 55 series column could be made to work with my 75 series intermediate shaft? Will the uni's on this fit the 55 spline?
Also does the 40 series ignition barrel fit the 55 column? When I went to the 75 i had to get a new ignition barrel and door locks....$$$ Wouldn't want to have to do that again.
yeh it will work with a 75 intermediate.. this is what I have used. The 55 column just pokes a splined end out thru the firewall.. an 80 series cushion joint will join the splined 55 shaft to the 75 intermediate.
not sure if ignition barrels are the same. ive just swapped everything cept the center shaft across and didnt have to worry about busting out ignition barrels.

ignition barrel is the same. i used my 40 ignition barrel in the 55 column because the wrecker couldn't find the keys to suit the column.
hey hey.. the steering is great.. havent had any issues and ive noticed a bit of a difference cos its heaps easier to steer in particular places than it was before.
double thumbs up on the upgrade tho.. well worth it..
in regards to yer 60 query i think its cos the gear might be too long.. I think ray has a 60 column with all the bits on the column instead of the dash.. personally i like mine on the dash.
the 75 colum can be shortened and nealy fits perfectly with only a slight mod on the mounting point
the whole colum is designed to crush in an accident so if you clamp the mount point in a vice then hit the bottom using a block of wood and a hammer you can compress(shorten) the entire colum
mine only has 30mm of it exposed from the dash and uses the standard 40 mount points
its still abit low but im used to it now and recon its sweet
ive also wired up the 75 indicator switch and ignition wipers are a headache and i couldnt make them work with the 40 wipers headlights are next but they will require relays as the 40 switch switches all the power whereas the 75 just switches relays
