Thinking about it, if this centre diff is used in any other transfer cases there may be one that is manually locked, so the dog may already exist, if you can find the borg warner part number for the diff you may be able to find if it is used in any others.
Hmmm. It looks like its not just a matter of adding a locking dog.
The reason behind this is there are 2 shafts (1 inside the other) from the centre diff that go into the VC. Because the centre one is the drive from the other side of the centre diff and going through to the rear diff, and the outer shaft is what drives the front diff, if the VC is removed and replaced with a locking dog, the centre diff will end up working as permanently locked 4WD when the dog is locked and no drive at all when the dog is unlocked.
The locking dog would need to be inside another shaft to work. I guess this could be done by manufacturing a locking dog using similar principles to that used by JacMac in their locking diffs, but its a lot of effort to produce something which I suspect still has a weak link in it anyway, and the weak like is the shaft that travels through the middle of the centre diff from the rear output through to the VC unit.
oh well. It was interesting anyway. I was hoping a locking dog could be used in place of the VC and actuates with an LT95 actuator along the lines of how Sam O controls his new LT230 disconnect.

The dog would have to engage the outer spline to the front output even when not engaging the rear shaft, the front output shaft is actually the VC

Inside the other shaft, or inside the VC housing if the silicon and plates were removed, must be lots of dead ones around to open up. Even if the VC is removed there will still be that amount of room in the case. But yes the weak link would be the rear drive shaft, but without seeing one I cant say how week it is, may still be stronger than a rear axle shaft since it doesnt have the torque multiplication of the rear diff gearing.
couldn't you just remove the VC all together and replace it with a soild shaft and then put the lockin dog on the front output shaft of the centre diff and lock the rear output?
like in a part time kit for an 80 toyjo.

Thats correct. What I thought may convert it into a constant 4WD with CDL, would end up making it a part time arrangement. Maintaining constant 4WD with CDL makes it a lot harder.
Hi, I just thought I'd drag out this old thread to see if anyone has come up with a manually locking cdl for the p38 yet?
I am looking at buying one but do not want the vc as I have heard it will not lock up with larger tyres.
