Upsizing tyres.. yes or no ?

Post by Dick »

I am about to invest in a new set of tyres for my Patrol ute, my dilemma is do I go up to 285/75/16 or remain with std 265/75/16 .. ?

Whats the vote !

Its only about 14mm more clearance. Will it make that much difference to power ? considering its not a massive change ..

Looking at MTZ's - 813 dia vs 841mm dia

The bigger the better.....within reason. I'm running 33s on my rig, upsized from a 31, fuel economy suffered by about 10 maybe 15%......but its worth it when its locked in low range. When it becomes mine (the missus daily driver) will definitley bung on some 35's and prolly t/case gearset.

Cheers, Dano.

If you have got the lift and power which you have both of. up the tyres. I run 37" Maxxis crawlers. Like Dano said once you get it off road you will reap th rewards. Once again fit for purpose.

The 285/75R16 give slightly better sidewall deflection and protection (simply due to the changed angle of the sidewall) and also run marginally cooler at highway speeds without affecting the gearing much at all. It also has a 122 Load rating (1500kg@ max inflation) It would be my preferred touring size.

Thanks for info to date, I also note the 265 is a 10 ply and 285 is 8 but the MTZ is fairly tough anyways..
Like a couple of you have said I dont think it will alter power too much, I am always looking for 6th gear as it is..
2250 @ 100ks now, so I wondered if a reduction in rpm may actually give me better fuel economy...
Thoughts ?
