Help with TDI300 Disco wont start!

Post by Remydog05 »

I have a 96 TDI300, AUTO, Disco Stock as a rock.

It used to cut out when I was driving and it hasnt dont it for ages.

Now I can start it for the first time that day and drive to whereeva Im going no probs.

THEN IT GETS INTERESTING!

I come out of a shop, etc and its turns over but wont start! I wait anything from 5 to 30mins and away it go's no probs!

I thought it might be electrical?? But then I didnt think it it would turn over like it does?? SO perhaps it feul related???

Its almost like it has to drain or fill?? (I know that sounds dumb!)

I have tried to pick a pattern but it can do it hot or cold, long trip, short trip, Ive even looked at if ive been on a hill or not!

This has been going on for months now and pissing me off!

Dont really want to get rid of it!

Sounds like the lift pump.

My 110 did the same sort of thing, would almost cut out at times then be fine other times.
Sometimes it was a pain to start but then would come good.

I changed the fuel filter one day and then could not for the life of me get it primed and going again..

Checked the little cam lever on the lift pump and nothing, replaced it and away it went.
Be warned though if you play with the cam lever on the lift pump and its not broken you may very well break it by putting a hole in the diaphram.

Plenty of TDI owners even carry a spare as its pretty common to kill them.
