4WD specific insurance
Hi All,
Does anyone on here have 4WD specific insurance? Can you recommend it as opposed to going with a 'normal' insurer?
I have just got a quote from Affinity for my 2000 Patrol to compare it to my normal insurance through AAMI. I spotted the ad for them in the FWDVic newsletter so thought i should check it out as i'm sure AAMI wouldn't want to know me if i crashed it off-road somewhere. Surprisingly it seems to be pretty similar in price but they will cover me anywhere at all on or off road.
So does anyone else have any further insight into this? Other insurers or personal experience with this type of insurance?
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Mark

Im here for the sausage!
http://www.tcis.com.au/ im not a member but ive seen it mentioned before.
macca81 you might want to look into your policy as even going down an unsigned/undesignated track could void your policy and this is where most 4wding is done.

and i think it is aust 4wd insurance or something.
As with most things, insurance is another area where you get what you pay for. heaper policies are cheap because they generally don't cover as much as your more progressive products such as scheme that Affinity do for 4wd Victoria.
Best 4wd policy on the market is by far the one that Affinity offer which is underwriten by Lumley General. You get a discount if you are a club member that is affiliated with 4wd victoria also. It is new for old for vehicles up to three years old, and has some fantastic extras in the cover that aren't covered by your generic motor insurers (AAMI, RACV etc) ie, if you drown your 4wd in a river you are covered, and you can include the replacement value of all your accessories / mods in the insured value of your vehicle just to name a couple. I think the policy also includes cover for accommodation and towage following an insured event from anywhere in Australia and the sub limits are either unlimited or very generous. Give them a call, get a quote and read through the wording. It $hits on any motor policy I have ever seen, and its nice to see they have finally got some decent security in Lumley.
I was with the Affinity Scheme a couple of years ago when it was underwriten by Great Lakes Insurance in the UK. When the security changed to Hollards, i left because Hollards decided to increase the rates significantly and my premium went from about $500 to over $1,000. Lumley came on board about 18 months ago and basically rewrote the policy in conjuction with 4wd Victoria and came up with the best motor wording I have ever seen out of any motor insurance policy for 4wds.MJP wrote:Thanks T_Diesel, some good info there. I presume you are insured with Affinity then?
Have you made an off-road claim with them? How were they to deal with?
Thanks,
Mark
My GQ is currently underwritten by Zurich through an insurance broker I use for all my insurance in La Trobe Street, currently paying about $600 including all mods and accessories at an agreed value of $25,000 (had to provide a valuation certificate to get it insured for that value). Mine is due in January, and I got a quote through Affinity about a month ago and it was about $800 including all mods. When mine comes due, I will be seriously considering moving it to Affinity for the better wording.
Can't comment on their claims service personally, as touch wood I have never had a motor insurance claim. I know a few guys that have got their 4wds through them and I have never heard anything bad about them, only praise but I don't think any of them have had a claim either! Lumley's are an Authorised Australian Insurer so there are no issues with the security there, and Affinity are a reputable insurance broker in Melbourne so I think you would be pretty safe insuring your vehicle with them.
At least they actually understand what 4wders that go off road actually do and they realise that a suspension lift makes your vehicle handle better offroad and is not a bad risk.
Cant say as I agree with you there.T_Diesel wrote: It $hits on any motor policy I have ever seen
Called them up this week to compare & WITH all extras included my car was worth LESS than RACV without any extras added.
I read their PDS & there was nothing in there that warranted $300 extra more a year, The only things that were included that RACV didn't were the Fridge & the GPS.
Sure you might Bag at RACV but I know of club members that drowned their sub 2YO car in a river & it was covered no problems. You also get free Roadside assistance.
Our other car is with TCIS due to the import bit, & their PDS is about the same too.
I've just gone through all this insurance crap with my 4by ,car's insured with suncorp at the moment and has been for years ,but know I've chopped it and put in a V8 they won't touch me now,nor will RACQ or Shannons, ended up going to TCSI and they got Lummlys to cover me with agreed value ,plus all mods for about $560 ish including free windscreen and cover for 4 wheeling (no geographical bounderies),beach driving and water crossings.See how I go with them.

Hey guys!
I am also in the boat for a new insurance policy!
At the moment I just have a standard car insurance......
The thing is, how does the extra cover work? Do you need receipts for all the gear? Fridge, lights, dual batteries etc. ?? As I do buy stuff second hand I dont have receipts for everything.....
I'd like to know how easy it is to insure all the extra gear and so on??
Also is a valuation of the car necessary?
Though about going with DGA.
I didn't have many options as I am not 25 yet but in a few months I will be so I should be able to get a better insurance policy?
