V6 GV airbox into a 4 Cyl GV

Post by TheOtherLeft »

Does anyone have a pic of the V6 GV (around 2002 body shape) airbox?

I'm looking into changing the airbox in my J20A engine to a V6 one and am wondering if it will fit as it will increase airflow. I don't have ABS so there's quite a bot of room aft of the factory airbox.

Will having a larger airbox cause problems, i.e. will it lean out the mixture or will the ECU adjust for it?

I heard somewhere that it's illegal to use larger airboxes as it changes something - lean's out the mixture or something???

Cheers,
Ben

Ben,

They use the same air filter. Have you measured the pressure drop across your airbox to know if it causing a mjor restriction?

Double Doh!!!! And here I was thinking about a quick and easy mod.

So does that mean the V6 is being restricted by a smaller air filter?

last year i put a 2.7 v6 in a four banger vit, air piping was the same diameter, and the box almost identical dimensions.

Yeah I just had a squiz at the Ryco website. The GVs from 98-2005 use the same air filter :x

I fitted a snorkel to a 05 XL7 and found the pipe into the airbox was bigger by 5mm radius compared to all other GVs

But is the air filter the same size? I thought it was.

The air filter size would be the biggest restriction hence trying to find a bigger one.

Well?

It seems to me that you are making an assumption that the airbox/filter is a major restriction but I still want to know if you have measured the pressure drop to prove this.

Or flowbenched the housing to figure out what it can flow?

My guess is you cna put the the worlds biggest filter on that motor and there won't be a measureable performance change.

There are at least two different types of air filters for the V6 GV's. I know because the local dealer took a guess and supplied the wrong size/ shape for my 2.7l XL-7.

One is square at both ends and the other has one end more rounded (<- mine.)

So, chances are there is a larger airbox out there, or at least there's something different! It might be the post 2003 update XL-7's that are different, mine's a 2004??
