hey mate i have a 2003 3.0 turbo diesel and cracked the head
he's not a diesel mechnic but see ted from trask motors in smith street capalaba next to trade tools did a top end rebuild, i bought the head $1300 from toyota and labour was around $1700. i found it a bit pricey but its been almost 2 years and never missed a beat so he would be reliable choice for me ... he'll call a shovel a shovel and nothing else.

Logan Specialized Engineering (38085978) did mine; he took ages but the quality is fantastic. He did so much extra too ensure the engine was going to be just right; it was well worth the wait. Even gave me warranty as long as it is left at 7psi boost for the warranty period; no other reco mob would do that.
I now have a reliable engine that is faster at 7psi than it was at 12psi before the rebuild.

For a decent job expect $5000-$6000 mine was $5662.00
That included balancing the motor, injector service, lightening the flywheel, port and polishing the head and both manifolds, aspin (spelling?) insert pistons, modifying the sump (histeer clearance).
Also included removal and refit of gearbox and new clutch; he replaced bolts, hoses, clamps and belts all over the place and had the radiator sent away and flushed (luckily since the radiator was 3 months old but was 30% restricted from biuldup flushing out of the heating system in cab and into the cores, flushed the full system too so it is now all clean)
He just seems to know his sh1t more than any of the other people a spoke to. For instance the first 1000km was run in oil (der) but it was also run without coolant as the coolant can stuff the head gasket while it is still seating. Another thing, he changed the OEM turbo oil return line with a bigger stonger one as he said it was twisting and restricting.
I just really liked his attention to detail.
End of the day, it depends on what you are willing to pay and what you want done. Whatever/Whomever you choose make sure they are doing a few diesels and not just "having a go".
As i said he does take his time though so don't expect it back quickly, depending on what you get done.

ok thanks for that luxyboy. i appreciate all that. Now, my second question was for the turbo, ive been looking into the DTS kit to go onto it. I dont wan power i just want reliability, and that extra tourqe to turn the 35's. Also looked at safari too however not sure.
As for the build, im one to pay good money and get it done instead of half price half uality shit thats seems to be kicking oround the place more often. My main concern was spending the cash on my pride n joy and having it looked at by a know nothing tossa.
Cheers, Chris

I got the DTS kit on mine; much of a muchness i think. I am turning 36" with no problem.
While the motor is apart it would be a good idea to have a look at an injector rebuild, fuel pump rebuild and possibly add a boost compensator since your getting the turbo. Cheaper while it is all off the car than later down the track; also means you know it is all good and you have some warranty on those bits too.

yeh, i had the whole injection system done around 15 thou ago so i would dare say it is all good or you seem to think get it double checked again whilst in it? Just reading up on the compensator now as i have no ideas on its doings in the motor
