Hopefully somebody can give me an answer to whats proberbly a complex question.

Bundera, Prado (Early Jap), Landcruiser.....


Landcruiser Running gear (Same as 78/79 series ?)
BJ70 SWB Leafs Deisel
BJ71-74 MWB Leafs Deisel

HJZ74 MWB Leafs Petrol
HJZ71-74 MWB Leafs Petrol

LC70 SWB Leaf


Hilux Running gear (Bundera & Prado ?)
RJ70 SWB Coils Petrol (eg 22R, 2H etc)
LJ70 SWB Coils Deisel
LJ73 MWB Coils Deisel


Does that table/list above look even close to corrrect ?
Any ideas what year each model ran ?

A friend is looking for me to get them one from japan (15 year rule) (hopefully can find one not rusted away or the life) I presume the BJ70-7x and LC70-7x would be the toughest and parts maybe easier (78/79 series running gear and some panels) but the RJ7x and LJ7x bundera's are all coil sprung and better handling on road and good for some mods but lighter running gear.

Are the bundy's same size as the other 7x cruisers ? ie could you swap a dash for example ?

What would you all buy ?

V8 Middy: That link is nearly impossible to read.

Evan: There are a couple of mistakes:

BJ71V- SWB leafs diesel (usually 13BT)
LJ71G- SWB coils 2LT 8" diffs landcruiser transfer (me have :))

I dont know about your HJZ7x either, shouldnt it be HZJ7x, with 1HZ diesel?

I dont know why you think the japanese ones would be rusted away, you will find that most are alot better than the aussie ones. Most of them are pristene, absolutely no rust. BJ71V's and BJ74's are the most common in Japan, mostly with the 13BT. Took a while to find my LJ71G in Japan, as for size i dont know, but after stuffing a 1JZGTE into my LJ71 i can tell you that the engine bay seems to be alot shorter than a troopie :roll:

First letter:

B, H, HZ, F etc = Engine type.

J = Country of origin (possibly not correct?)

40, 60, 80 = Body type.

So a BJ42RV for example would have a 'B' series 4 cylinder diesel motor, built in Japan, with a 40 series body, the extra 2 means, later model, comes with some additional stuff, discs, 3.4L 3B and so on. same with a 62 series. RV = Recreational Vehicle?

Seems the LJ7x are the way to go.

LJ71G- SWB coils 2LT 8" diffs landcruiser transfer


So a 70 was SWB and the first, a LJ71,72 are also SWB ? and a LJ73 is a MWB, And they never made a coil sprung 74 i am assuming.

And so that means all RJ7x's/LJ7x's are light duty and were coil sprung ?

You used a manual behind your 1jz or auto ? wonder if you could adapt a hybrid 1jz 2wd auto and mate it to a landy transfer case.... hmm this is even getting me a little excited about sounds like a fun project.

Oh yeah and you do some rust on japanese 4wd's where there is snow in some areas. All depends what area you get them from. Once i give the details of model to my mate i will get some idea of price and availability / quality.

OK, let me try, LOL. Of course since we are talking about 7x series vehicles that are older than 15 years and were sold in Japan the choices are a bit narrower.

The first letter is the engine
B=3B 3.4L n.a. diesel or 13B-t 3.4 turbo diesel
L=2L-T 2.4L turbo diesel
AFAIK no R or H engines were available in the 85-90 7x series in Japan.

The second letter "J" designates that it belongs to the Landcruiser line.

The 3 digit designates that it belongs to the 7x series (utility line)

The 3rd and 4th digits together designate the body type and engine:
BJ70 = SWB, 3.4L n.a. diesel
BJ71 = SWB, 3.4L turbo diesel
BJ73 = MWB, 3.4L n.a. diesel
BJ74 = MWB, 3.4L turbo diesel
LJ71 = SWB, 2.4L turbo diesel.

All 3B and 13B-T engined vehicles get the leaf springs in the 85-90 period.
The LJ71 gets the coil springs all around.

The Japanese market is way more limited than the world market where you can get different models such as the RJ70, HJ75, pick ups and others. Some special purpose vehicles were sold in limited quantities, such as the BJ75 LWB for fire engines, etc.

After 1990 the choices of models broaden a bit with the addition of the petrol engine, the 3.0L turbo diesel, etc.

beanz2 just summed up perfectly what is on offer to import from Japan under the 15 year rule.

Evan: The only 2LT powered where LJ71, there is no such thing as an LJ72 - LJ74. I have the original R151 behind the 1JZ, strong as. This is the reason i went for the LJ71, coil spings, R series box, lighter than BJ series. Im sure you could adapt a 1jz auto somehow, but i cant see why you would bother, the R151 is super tough and it's manual!!!!!!! more fun!!!!!

R151 is it much different to an R154 ?
Atleast its an R series and not a G series. (Some W series were atleast ok)

Different ratio's and slightly different output shaft i think. This has been talked about a few times, do a search and you might uncover something. W58 is a pretty strong box.

Thats an easy one Jake .They are the PZJ 7* with the 5cyl 3ltr Mercedes diesel.Im pretty sure the engine is the same as some Merc car motors but not sure which. Sold in Australia but not common.Saw one for sale in Perth recently and I think one is used in competitons in the Eastern states

It is actually a PZJ not a PJ.
PZJ7*

My source on the motor, claims it is a 1hz, 3.5L (So a 1HZ missing a piston) called a 1pz the motor apparently has some parts availability issues. I would not use one. Better off getting a 1hz.

The 5 cylinder is the 1PZ engine and it was never made with a turbo. The only middy that got the 1PZ was the PZJ73, a soft top non-European, non-Japanese RHD model. No LHD model was made, so South Africa is a good guess.

According to Rob Mullins site the motor is made by mercedes brazil and is the same motor used in the Banderante which is a landcriuser clone made in brazil.
Beanz2 South africa used an Alantis diesel ,a Perkins made in SA under lic.How are you going with your import 7* series,seat belts ect

15 year rule is how i would import. If i need belts they can be sourced easily enough.
Fuel filler neck (in case of unleaded) and mirrors etc are the main complaince issues. side intrusion bars are the biggest possible pain in the you know what !

For my LJ71G, all i did was replace the drivers side mirror with a troopie (flat glass) one. Then after the pits i put my original chrome electric convex one back on. :) Thats all

Ross, The SA non-Toyota diesel was the ADE 3.8L n.a. 4 cylinder. I think the Merc 5 cyl. was only installed in Bandeirante, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Ive seen 2 of these for sale in recent years in Perth and an aquaintence reckon he had one near new as a company car in Karratha many years ago.The Dec issue of aust 4WD monthly talks about them in the 1st 3 paragraphs of page 168 in the article about 7* series
