engine rotates but will not start.....AGAIN!!!
engine rotates but will not start.....AGAIN!!!
hi all this is my situation....
i ended up buying Want33's sierra soft top tub to replace my T-REX eat'n sierra hiptop
so i had to pull all the wiring out ect ect now after putting the new tub on and connecting the wiring back up the engine rotates but just will not start!!!!
i have put everything back together bcos i marked the male & female ends sof the wires/plugs!!1
ive tried moving the distributor whilst starting the engine but it still wont crank over...
it does have fuel, and fuel is reaching the carby (bcos i saw it myself)
the sparkplugs are brand new as are the leads...
and the battery is brand new too.
it hasnt been started for 2 months so could that be a problem?
the only thing i havnt connected are the lights and heater control...
i cant think of why it wont start???
cheers islandvit
i did a search but it came up with nothing...

Have you phisically checked that there is spark at the plugs, if you havent that would be the first place thing to check. By fuel reaching the carby, you mean that when you flick the throttle you can see the accelerator pump discharge down the throat of the carby right? If you have fuel and there is spark, get a timing light and set the base timing to about 8 degrees BTDC. It may take a bit of winding over and possibly pumping the throttle, but it should start.

alright i tried the spark plugs and they have spark
fuel is reaching the carby i checked it again
when u said set the BTDC at 8 degrees did u mean with a 17mm spanner on the bottom pully and turn it clockwise till it lines up with 8 degrees? cos thats what i did....
then i connected up the timing light...
got a mate to rotate the engine and pump the throttle buh it didnt start for about 2 minutes max!!!
then i noticed a small fuel leak under the carby, but it stoped when my mate stoped pumpin the throttle and rotating the engine...
does that mean the carby has been flooded?
it still didnt start????

Simple way to do it. Turn the crank with a spanner until it's sitting on 8 degrees. Take the distributor cap off and check that the arm on the rotor button is in line with where the electrode of the distributor cap for number one lead is. If it is opposite, it means the engine is 180 degrees out and you will need to turn it by hand another full revolution until the timing mark lines up with 8 degrees again. Grab a test light, connect the alligator clip to the battery negative, and place the tip onto the coil minus. Turn the ignition to the on position, but do not crank. Now if the test light isn't on already, turn the distributor by hand until the test light lights up and then find the point where the test light 'just' switches off. This is your 8 degrees. Lock up the distributor and try and crank.
Sorry about the long winded response.
Oh and I would put a new set of plugs in there as I think you may have flooded it.
One more tip. If it has flooded, hold the foot flat to the floor with the accelerator and don't pump or pull the choke, that will only make matters worse. The engine needs maximum air intake to ignite the fuel. Once it has started and stopped coughing and farting, and it starts to rev, back off the accelerator.
Hope this has been helpful

cool i dont have a test light as yet but will tomoro hopefully. as for the plugs i took them out just now n the had a fuel odour/residue on them??? but they do stil spark up so are the still good? they where brand new (2months old and the sierra hasnt been anywhere out of the garage as its unrego'd)
thanks for the replies guys cherrs, islandvit

Just let the plugs dry off for a few minutes out of the car - they will be fine. Unburnt fuel wont damage sparkplugs.
Whilst you have the plugs out turn the engine over on the starter for a few seconds to clear out some of the unburnt fuel if its really flooded.
Just to restate the timing requirements, the engine needs to have its timing marks aligned when the No. 1 cylinder is at top dead centre. Take the rocker cover off and both exhaust and intake valves on No. 1 cylinder should NOT be depressed. If they are rotate the engine one complete turn and check again.
Once you have doe this you know the engines near TDC on No 1 cylinder.
The rotor arm in the distributor should ( as others have said ) be pointing to the number one plug lead connection on the cap.
And just checking you have the right firing order - you havn't mixed the leads up ?

It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.
