rear GQ lsd in front. (not the same old question)

Post by brad-chevlux »

Is axle spline count the only thing stopping people from putting a rear GQ lsd in the front diff?

As is Navara rear, but the LSD is tiny and the one we tried smashed the friction plates with 36 12.5 Simexes on a TB42. Good while it worked though.

He's interested in mounting a rear GQ LSD in his FRONT GQ diff.

Not sure if it's just the spline count.

Basicly it's good question - because - if there is easy to use rear LSD then there is possible to use rear vacum locker to

The ZD30 powered Navaras run the C200 rear diff. Same diff as used in the front of MQ's and MK's.

VG33E powered D22's run the diff your after the H233B in the rear.

QD32 and TD27 powered D22's run the H233B rear diff aswell

The rear LSD center will fit into a front high pinion center housing, the rake angle of the ring and pinion are opposite each other front to rear. I am sure that using the wrong gears will drive but not sure about noise or wear to the teeth.
However if you use front gears and change the tail shaft flange (the rear flange is larger than the front) it would fit.
There is then the 33 to 31 spline count to deal with, I have heard that side spider gears can be changed front to rear but am not sure if they will fit.

On the other hand you can use a front high pinion housing in the back with all the rear internals, this gives much reduced drive shaft angles for big lift SWB patrols. Also much cheaper than cardian joints.

So i probably should have posted a bit more detail.

It's not some thing i i'm looking at doing. it's more trying to build the knowledge base a little.

Also the it was bough up about using a the front high pinion diff in the rear.

Spline count is a given.

Would front ring gear bolt onto the rear centre? and rear ring gear to front centre?

That would basicly alow the fitting of the rear LSD to the front keeping the front ring and pinion (if the splin count was the same) ?
OR
The front open centre fitted with an auto locker to the rear with the rear ring and pinion (if the spline count was the same)?

The front and rear ring gears are the same on my 89 mav, not sure if there are any other models that are different though.
Yes the LSD will fit into the front housing and the front open center will fit into the rear housing.
However the front housing is only 2 pinion in most models and therfore not as strong, even with an auto locker its the size of the hemisphere that could limit strength.
if you need a high pinion because of a big lift then you probably have more than std horsepower as well and the front center in the rear could be a limiting factor.

note: electrical things have smoke inside them
mechanical things have a bang inside them
let either of these out and they normally dont work again

GQ front and rear are open in my garage - they are with different side gears
