An interesting Daihatsu SCAT i've stumbled on.

An interesting Daihatsu SCAT i've stumbled on.
I wonder what engine is that.
Does it sound like a petrol or a diesel?
I'm guessing it could either be a 1JZ or an SR20.

My RIG sucks big time.
It's petrol for sure, although it doesn't sound refined enough to be a 1JZ.. probabloy some older motor with a turbo bolted on and some other work.
Could be just a Feroza motor with a bigger carby, they do 9k rpm easily
i'd be rushing out and buying an IFS rocky
9K - hmmm, I suspect thats the distance until catistrophic failure.HotFourOk wrote:a Feroza motor with a bigger carby, they do 9k rpm easily
Still I'm waiting on a video to prove me wrong, so could have to eat my words.
( usual disclaimers )
It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.

Well being a comp truck back here, most ppl would use an SR20DET or 1JZ. Most jokers here run turbocharged petrol engines for comp work in west malaysia (Peninsular) while in east malaysia (Boreno) they would be running 13 -15BTs, 1HZ, 1KZs and UZFEs. The scat would be not competitive enough even if he was to put in the biggest common carbie petrol engine, 22R.
But i just can' recognise the sound this time round watching the video this time round.

Hi baby god,, the Malaysian Rainforest Challenge is the one event I have wanted to do, for about the last 16 years I have watched the footage with extreme interest. Because of the M-R-C I started in the comp scene (as a navigator) here in OZ, & then later built up a daihatsu to start comping as a driver..,I have found that V6 engines (3.8lt) fit into scats just nicely,& in return give you plenty of horse power to the wheels, the next prob I had was breaking stuff, ie cv's, axels, diffs,g/boxes,transfer cases. so I went to coil toyota front & rear ends, auto trans & hilux trany, this was stronger but i was still breaking the occasional CV ,but was frequently breaking 4.88 diff centers & twisting the rear housing ( still too much torque for the car) ( but I want more) now I have put in stregnthened Nissan GU Patrol diff housings with imported 4.88 ratios (they were cheap) I have now found my last week point is the hilux transfercase, whitch I have killed 1 already, in only 2 comps,as for the want mor H/Power I was thinking of supercharging the V6,but after reaserch found it would be easier & cheaper to put in a GEN 111 V8 (6.2lt) all alloy & would weigh less than the V6,there are guys over here already running V8 toyota sorra donks. anyway these are just some of the mod/probs we have sorted I would luv to bring the FATROZA over to the M-R-C to compete but its too much $$$ for me at this stage

I'm sure with the right budget, sponsors, PR & Marketing skills you will be able to participate in any 4x4 comp challenge 1 day.
As for myself i would love to check out the Transylvania and Lagoda challenges in Eastern Europe 1 day.
Then again i think i'll rather check out the Oz comp scene instead as I'm not too fond of cold weather. I can catch a cold with 25 deg c temps.
I'm sure your truck as it is will be fairly competitive. Just looking at your setup makes me wet hahaha...
Some years ago some Ozzies brought over a Holden V6 powered Four Runner to participate in the Trans Peninsular (Grand daddy of the RFC). Pretty quick.
The real deciding factor with the comp scene here is the Winch that really takes the fun out of driving.
The big boys run their God's winch that gives them the edge over the foreign teams. Makes the M8274 with gigglepins setup a Pita.
Those who don't know the God's winch is a simple PTO winch fashioned out of an old axle with a ratio that match with the car ratio.
Freaking fast and dangerous too.
I might sound silly but at times i think the RFC is a tad over rated. I think the Borneo Challenge (East Malaysia) is more competitive and the trucks are much better prepared. If you're mad about the RFC why don't u consider renting a truck instead? who know's might work out to be cheaper and "better" setup.
Anyway i'm sure by now u're quite curious how are most of the comp cars setup here.
U'll be surprised how stockish the cars are relatively. No fancy strengthened axles or CVs. Mainly just stuff striaght from the wreckers.
Common comp cars are BJ40s or CJ7s.
-God's winch
-Bundera drivetrains
-1JZ
The bigger budget cars.
-God's winch
-2JZ, 15BT
-Volvo C303 axles with fast ratios or 80series axles with ARB lockers.
-LC 60 70 or 80 gearbox, TC
-axle pushed forward
-simple 3 links front and rear using Bundera links.
- individual brakes (help turn the cars in tight spots)
I think i've rambled enough.
Hope to see u in the RFC 1 day.

If you are interested in the Transylvania Trophy have you seen the photos from Gonzo4x4 web page, he competed in 2007 in a Scat, links to photos are here. Also if you want to have a look at a proto truck from Lagoda a local guy had just got back from this years competion and has documented his build here and there is a blog from his race here. A Daihatsu proto truck on portals actually led Lagoda for the first few days this year, don't know how it finished though.

HI baby god, I have seen the god winch here at the 07 outback challenge, the 2 Thai teams were runing them, locals here were calling them spirit winches, super quick 30 to 40klm per hr winching but they have been outlawed in AUS compititions, (most comps sponcered by ARB or WARN) could have somthing to do with it. & they say they are a non breaked winch?? one of my mate has done Bournieo as a nav in a blue local BJ, & was back this year in the same seat for M-R-C, he is Clay Mongan,Clay & I both naved & competed for the same team vechicles for close to 10 years, one day , just have to win lotto first.. But if you are KEEN on coming to AUS to compete, keep in touch, you would like the terrain, we could show you arround.
cheers Piglet
