1998 Patrol 2.8L 6 cyl Turbo Diesel

Post by clarky_81 »

I'm considering buying a 1998 Patrol 2.8L 6 cyl Turbo Diesel and just wandering if anyone has had problems with these models and whether it's a good buy for 17k with 140k on the clock...

I'd like to buy a 4x4 for under 20k and would like to know what might be the best 4x4 I could get for that sort of money

You'll get people who like them and people who $hit can them. There are plenty of threads on here about them, just use the search function and you'll find a few threads, have a read through them, take it for a drive and make your own mind up.

Here's one to get you started.

Don't do it !!
Don't do it !!
Don't do it !!
Just don't do it !!

I bought a 97 model 4 years ago. Has cost me a fortune since. It blew up at 240k so I now have a 4.2 in it. Should have got that from the start. Have wasted alot of $ learning that mistake.

So I say again
DON'T F@#KING DO IT !!

You will regret it.

Find a cheap one, and bolt a RB30DET into it

OR slam a RB30 block with a RB25 or RB26 twin cam head on top in the engine bay

Huge power can be had and it will bolt up to the gearbox and engine mounts
if the RD2.8eti engine ends up dead.

I came very close to doing that in my GQ

You can but a 4.5 duel fuel for the same money and it won't explode.

i use to own one and didnt have a problem with it except it was gutless and know of a mate who also owned one and his went like a shower of shit with an exhaust mod and nothin else!
but in sayin that i dont think i would buy one again simply because i now own a GQ and am lovin the balsy 4.2 petrol gussler!

my mates one got pinched and he baught the 4.5 and now regrets it, he was at one stage asking me if i wanted to swap!
but as in other threads about this there will be so many fors and againsts that at the end of the day its all about what you need in a 4wd and weather power in a vehicle is important to you or not!

goodluck with it anyway dude!

I own a 2.8 TD GQ & I have had no probs with it & have reached 300,000km. I run 35's on it as well. I don't expect it to fly....It's a deisel. Deisels don't fly. She has never let me down.

The only bad thing is the first gear ratio (especially with 35's). It's too high when it comes to towing a 3 tonne boat. That is the only reason I need to change engines. But normal driving & general 4wding is fine.

I have hauled my boat with it for a long time & as I said she still runs well. At 300,000 she has minimal smoke too.

Go figure...seems like not everyone has the same opinion.
