quicksteel on radiators

hey all, put a small hole in my rad yesterday, wasnt big enuf to have a stream of coolant comming out under atmospheric pressure, just rapidly dripping. patched up the hole using quicksteel so i could get home. after an hour drive to get home i had not leaked any more at all, so i was wondering how permanent a fix quicksteel can be? should i rush out to get the rad fixed or can i wait a cpl of weeks till i actualy have the cash to get it fixed?

should last a few weeks ok, just dont risk any road trips, in case it doesnt last. check it each start up.

I've used quicksteel on small radiator cracks, lasted for years. Infact it outlasted the radiator itself. Only suspect place was on a crack on neck where top hose fits onto. Everytime you removed top hose it would crack again. Eventually i got it silver soldered by radiator bloke.

Good stuff, plugs minor exhaust cracks too

Silver seal is pretty good too, I call it a can of magic

this is true, never more than 50km from a town... altho in same instances it may be a 5 hour drive to get that 50km


if it lasts 10 days that should be fine, will give me enuf time to get money for a new bottom tank... or might just silversolder it up myself if i get really motivated

dunno if its what was used on the challenge... its bin to long since i watched that dvd... but yes, can get it from supercrap. tis good stuff, but this is the first time iv had to use it on something that is actualy important to the running of the vehicle

Kneadit ( wood workers putty ) also works

but a can of silver in the glovebox is a must have item

I tried the stuff from Supercheap on the weekend, not a successful exercise. It would not mix the 2 parts properly before starting to harden.

if you cleaned it properly before you apply the quicksteel, it will outlast the radiator EASY!!!

anyone that says it wont last, has not used quicksteel

For sure. Few years ago i put a small crack in my zook fuel tank. Cleaned it on the side of the trail, and put some quick steel over it as a temporary repair. 3 years later my temporary repair is still going strong. It has acutally held up to mroe abuse on the rocks.

I used it to patch a gash in a diff housing - that was over 7 years ago and no leaks at all.
