So I want to start competing in 4x4 comps.

So I want to start competing in 4x4 comps.
So in all seriousness....
What do I do?
My lux has 33 MTR's, 4.88 diff, twin lockers, highmount (well its in the garage ready to go on), bobbed tray, ok suspension (better than stock).
What kind of comps can I feasibly go in and/or what do I need to change to enter others... It will be continually modded as time allows, but I really want to get into the competition thing, I LOVE competition.
I need to join a club (still no idea who to join).......
What else?
I know dudes on here compete and can give me some helpful info, just anything I should know....

I rather the driving style events. XRCC, woodpecker, Nissan Trials. But they all seem to only have super mod classes, and I dont have the budget to outfit the truck with anymore gear (tyres, suspension) I do have the $$$ to keep what i have running though.
Navruns look fun and from what I know they are open to all vehicle classes. Winch challanges look fun too...

That makes 2 of us in the same boat !!
I'm not a "club" man, tend to bore me and there is usually 10 times more discussion that action.... so the likelyhood is I'll end up being a member but non active.
I pour all the $$$ I can into one rig and while its not perfect id does a hell of a lot better than most, so a secound rig primarily for comp is out of the question at this stage.
I recon we should put our heads together and design our own comp for members of OL only !!
Hold it over a series of weeks and different stages at different locations,...IE:
Stage 1/
Otways...southwest zone
stage 2/
Toolangi... southeast zone
stage 3/
Omeo...... northeast zone
stage 4/
Bendigo.... central zone
stage 5/
Mildura....northwest zone
members in the "zones" could organise a route and help with the running of the day/days event
each participant receives "points" at each comp and an overall winner is decided at the end
Basically a 4x4 drive with added points for a grand total...hell I'd organise a run that would scare a few !!!
keep it simple, cheap, fun, and relaxed and I recon we'd have a winner
my thoughts anyway

Most of those comps you do need tp be in a Club dont like ay of the current clubs in your area get a few togethere and start your own the 4 wheel drive association for your state will have some info on how to get started
Woodpecker doesnt have to be supper modified trucks last year SCJ got 2nd and this year they got 3rd one of the SJC memeber got 3rd outright and one of the SJC teams got 3rd best team Now while no one remembers who came 2nd ...... It shows that you dont have to have super modified trucks to compete as all 4 of the SJC trucks had bolt on supension kits and 35" tyres lockers etc it was all of the shelve type of stuff nothing wild like some of the trucks that came much further down the list sure they were not stock but neither is your truck
Woodpecker is a lot more about having a solid truck but knowing how to drive it and operate as a team
Why dont you try and get into a club and navigate for someone it is a great way to learn what is involved
The Nvrun type is a good beginer but the 4wdin is a little on the tame side. For this type of event you will need to fork out some $$ on a GPS, you can do most Navruns in your standard 4b so you should sh!t it in.
The pajero challenge would be the next one up, once again caters for your standard 4b but also has a modified class, this years comp is said to be harder than last years for the mod class and some pretty difficult terrain is planned rumour has it, this may test you and your truck if you only have 33's, but hey get your winch on the bar and you will be able to get yourself out of the sh!t should it happen. If you are interested get in quick. Again this is a navigation format which will see you driving for about 20 hours straight.

I would love to start competing too. But the costs of setting up now for this like the Winch challenge events and what not puts it out of the range of most people.
Being in a wagon, tight courses are not good. Our club runs an excellent event called the Gold Coast 2000. Similar to OBC type events. Wouldn't mind setting up for that maybe 2005. I do like the driving type events, ASCC, etc.
The nav run's are good fun. We did the night run Kym Bolton put on in Caboolture not long ago.

Start off with events that there are no time constaints, the Paj Challenge is perfect.
I learnt so much last year and we were under no pressure we just wanted to finish which we did.
What we did see were some very competitive guys who have these types of events sussed right out. For blokes like you and me it would be near impossible to win.
Other events like Navrun and Manibobar are similar but have time constraints.
I guess moving up from there to more challenging driving are the Winch Challenges and the like but your talking at least 35"s here to have a hope in hell.
Rumour has it the 2004 Paj Challenge (modified) will be a lot harder than previous years and 33"s are an absolute minimum but 35"s are the go.
It does attract the Mike Smith's etc of the comp world so it is very competitive it really puts things into perspective.
Join a club, get involved, get to know people, it is definitely a scene with the same faces lurking around.
But Steve and I didn't know what to expect last year but we had an absolute ball, finished the event, met some people and we will do it again.
Earlier this year when we were camped up at the high country a convoy stopped and a bloke came over (we were sitting there having a beer) and he said "who owns the white Paj ?". I am 90% finished on building the 4runner into a dedicated comp car.....the only thing i am worried about at the moment is actually getting to use it in comps and events.....most the clubs up here (central coast NSW) already have their teams for the comps. Thought about starting my own club but it seems very expensive on $$$ and time, both of which are hard to come by lately

This is kinda what I am getting at. Whats the go with comps? Are the big comps only open to clubs and hence are the spots already full...
I would happily travel to QLD for comps if my car was capable of driving the course. (ie) The Queensland Rock comp on at Easter, which caters for Novice unlocked cars all the way up to Outlaw....
I am happy to use my Daily Driver for comps, as I can use another vehicle if I bust up the lux..
I want to hear more from those who have done comps, big or small how you went about starting to compete...

I got asked to fill in for Nissan Trials (joined Carltons club for this one )and I joined a club for Woodpecker.
I suppose it depends on what club you join as most of the big clubs I imagine would have a 'pecking order' for competition spots

I was worried about this too
However, most comps (speaking from my vast experience of 2 comps ) cater for vehicles of all capabilities. You may not be batling for 1st in the Outlaw class, but the battle in your class can be just as intense
The other thing I accepted fairly early on was the fact that I'm not going to roll up to a comp and pull 1st prize straight up I went out there to have fun, enjoy myself and test myself and my rig to the fullest.
I know it sounds a bit Grimace, but go for it and give it your best shot. Don't go out there with unrealistic expectations about being Tracy Jordan or John Gilleland or Glen Dobbins

The QROCK event would be a great place to have your first COMP run. (long way to travel).
After that XRCC Mod would suit you!
The biggest Problem you would have with competing in QLD is that if you busted something HOW will you get HOME??????

I also keep in my mind that people have come to watch you compete, if there is some smartarse in the crowd yelling shiat at you for driving like a Pansy, a good one to put them in there place is to ask them "why aren't you competing". Usually shuts them up!!!

Looking at XRCC round zero, it looked like there would be no way my lux would do that course. Are the tracks changing, more options?

just pick the first event your allowed into and just do it
doesnt matter how long it takes or where you place.....the idea is to have some fun and push yourself to [or just over] your limit.
When i first started in my unlocked patrol the only thing i was interested in was to try and finish, i wasn't even TRYING to compete with anybody else.
I cant remember any spectators seriously hanging shit on me, in fact they seem to cheer the underdog even more as they can see how hard you are trying.

XRCC at the moment is doable with a Locked Lux and some skill. Look at Dave's 4runner, he did all the tracks. Not as easy as the 2 Sams but he still got threw!!!
Also the Vids usually show the hardest parts!!!
By the sounds of it QROCK will be far better for you!!!!!

We have put a lot of research into getting the terrain to look accurate on our videos - glad you guys appreciate the work and enjoy the vids. Full credit must go to the drivers for puttin' it on (and trusting me even though the can't see me - I'm usually very close to the rigs )
Tonka, just run the rig you have, as Bid Red said, the mods never end and if you wait until it's perfect, you'll prolly never start. You'll also find a lot more people will get behind you if the rig has less mods (people love the underdog), that way there are less expectations to place in the top range.

Tonka your lux is very similar to mine
and I drove in the Nissan trials
which was my first comp and I had a ball.
you dont need big rigs with big bucks
to get out and have some fun.
Nissan trials has all different classes.
