if there was a coice on where to roll your fourby , i bet you 10 out of 10 you would want to roll it in a paddock and not half way up or down a steep decent in a rut in the mud!

As I already pointed out, here's my pov 'simplified' just for you into a question- Which is a Hilux more appropriate for, respecting it's overall build design and intended uses- a fire-trail or paddock doughnuts?

Anyhow, i am not 100% sure on the workings of a 4wd, and have a few questions, particularly regarding the different modes (2wd 4wd etc)

I'm pretty sure there are stickers on the drivers' sunvisor and also on/inside the glove box that explain EVERYTHING in regards to using High and Low range.

I use low range (2WD) for tricky reversing, speed control over rough terrain, or if i'm pulling stumps or something.

No way, if's it's going over during donuts you're not getting off lightly, especially with a V8 to supply the fury.

jes, if we get down to the leval of "having fun", then the reason you buy a 4wd for having fun is to go 4wding. if you consider "having fun" means that you sit in a paddock doing doughies, then go out and buy a $200 falcon ute and thrash it, thats what they are made for.

commadore/ford = doughnuts


irrespective of whether there is a risk of rolling when on a firetrail, you are usualy conscious of this and going fairly slowly anyway so will often have time to correct yourself to avoid such a roll.
if you have your foot to the floor and your wheels at full lock, the g-forces acting upon a 4wd vehicle make it very prone to rolling. and i dont care how good you are, if you start lifting wheels when going hard doinf nuts, its just dumb luck if you can correct enough to save a roll.


stop being a tool and go buy an old falcon if you wanna do nuts. its safer that way.




in responce to the origional question. take a 4wd course, read this forum heaps, go on your first few trips with expirienced 4wders, and have fun doing it!

and go hooning on your dirtbike

You are abusing your 4WD if you go out and do doughnuts in it.

It is designed to offer maximum traction in rough terrain, not lack of traction in doughnut land

In fact even your old Falcon ute isn't designed for doughnuts, but it is more suiteed than a 4WD.

Next week he comes back asking about where to buy a spare body for his lux as it tipped over wrecking everything.

The trick with getting older is to trade experience for knowledge, without killing yourself in the process.

Older just means weve done it before, and decided it was too expensive, or not worth doing again in a hurry hehe.

If you want to do donuts, just get a cheapie small car and have a ball.
I think you will find that your lux will bite if you use it.
Anyway, once you have done some real 4x4ing, you wont see donuts as the best way to spend your time driving

how is that hypocritical? They are all part in parcel of driving a track. Chucking a doughy is just being silly. It does not mean you are getting further on the track, has no role to play other than going in a circle throwing mud.

where are you going down a track? do you have to be there? you are going for pure pleasure, same in a competition. PLEASURE is teh operative word.

driving a firetrail simply to drive it may seem silly aswell to most people, but we all do it for the fun of it. correct?

Getting further down the track takes some level of skill and thought hanging donuts .. well .. turn the wheel and hold it flat pretty much sums it up .. I can hang donuts on my ride on mower if I want ...

I guess it is whatever floats your boat... If going round and round in very small circles on private land is what does it for you, good for you .. most people grow out of this by about age 18.
