Hi All,
How hard is it to get a welding ticket - i.e. how long is the tafe course and rough cost?
E.g. I am talking about a ticket that would allow you to do structural MIG welding on a chassis.

don't know about perth, but i no in qld you have to do a basic welding course which will cover one aspect of welding. i.e. MMAW(stick) or GMAW (Mig), no choice.

this is coming from a boilermakers back ground

When i was really keen(young and silly) I always wanted to get "welding tickets"...ie coded welding/pipe/structural stuff. I checked out a few places in Perth during my apprenticeship, you often saw them advertise in the Sunday Times in the employment section.
Thing is that most people would ask you to complete a weld test prior to employment regardless of how many tickets you had...like a drivers licence...just because you have one doesn't mean you can drive

Anyone can complete a weld to the relevant Aust Standard, and then it is submiited for NDT(non destructive testing...magnetic particle, dye pen,ultrasonic or x-ray). The testing is the cheap part...the report to go with it is the expensive part!!!!
If the weld passes to the applicable test method, and conforms to size and contour, then bingo..its all good.
With regards to welding on chassis, it also comes down to joint design and direction of welding, heat input and so on.
I have seen paperwork with regards to vehicle mods, cutting and welding chassis that require the person to have so many years of experience, completed similar jobs and so on.
A course to give you the basic concepts would give you the confidence to complete a weld that is neat, and sound.
Not sure of the price(local TAFE or whatever they are called these days) but the experience and knowledge gained would be beneficial....but I doubt wether it would give you automatic qualifications to complete the weld.

as apprentice boilermaker 3rd-4th yr, mate if you want tickets just gor for the 8G mig welding ticket,
as an apprentice you will get people telling u dont need tickets just practical be hind u but fact is , more practice u have and ticket u have the $$$$ u will get ,

if it's just for rego be one hell of a way to waste some cash, as the QLD transport places don't look at the welds etc or if they do it'd just be the guy behind the counter.
I had to extend the chassis on a HR truck 2 weeks ago.
I asked the foreman if they check out the welds etc, and the reply was the truck shop said "weld it yourself [work] then rego the truck they don't bother with tests at the transport joint."
The truck shop even supplied the extra bit of metal to extend it as well.
so unless your really after a job doing truck/trailer welding it might not even be worth the costs.
though Hino HR truck chassis are 8mm thick mild steel so you'll want a decent sized welder to do a good job.
though great info as I'm wanting to expand on the paper side myself.

Neither. I was looking at doing some mods a while back in QLD, and my blue plater said all mods (suspension mounts etc) would need to be done by a ticketed welder.zagan wrote: is this for rego or a job?
I can weld fine with stick/mig/oxy. I was just thinking if it isn't that difficult to get a ticket then I would pay the $$$ and do the tests.
But it sounds like for a one-off build it would be easier/cheaper to just get the welds tested (or pay someone with a ticket to do them).
