GREEN GTI ZOOK BUILD
GREEN GTI ZOOK BUILD
as i got bored one night i decided to pull apart my zook and start my build up.
iv started by giving her a respray. im painting it blush green (dark green) mainly because i have 5L of it sitting in the shed and its not cheap to buy so thought i would use it. also putting wide track flares on her to cover the bigger tyres and rims.
then i got a GTI motor sitting their wich im going to put in after i finish the respray, i would put it in now but i have to drive it while im supercharging my lexus, thats a differant story though. also might supercharge or turbo the GTI motor as well just for fun lol
also got planned RUF, custom bull bar, custom slidders, custom roll cage, transfer gears, maybe WT diffs or lux diffs undesided atm depends on what size tyres i want to run at a later date.
i wasnt going to do a write up but then i thought some of the feedback that you guys will give along the way will be priceless as lots of you have done most of these mods allready,
now for some pics
before i started
damn i wish i didnt treat her so bad now, then i would'nt have to panel beat so many dents.
just pulling some dents out with the welder and welded some rust up around the window their. was the only rust in the whole car.
had to remove the NT brackets so i can weld on the WT brackets (thanks to nicbeer) for the WT flares
this is pretty much where its up to all panel beated just have to wet rub her and spray the green on hopefully get it done this weekend but its looking like ill have to do family stuff instead. damn!

nice mate...
I'm jealous of your shed and panel-beating know how! how do you "pull" dents out with a welder..? (or do you mean cut out & weld in new sheet)
Plans sound good.
depending on your future tyre size, i would have looked at doing a virtual lift/wheel arch & guard lift to fit bigger tyres with less lift, but thats just me.
also the members section is where people usually stick their buildups

All the gear, No idea...
cheers dee.
to pull the dents i just welded some washers to the dents, pulled on the washers then ground them off.
some mods iv done to the car allready are
welded rear diff centre. (thinking of doing front)
2inch lifted leaf springs
rancho 5000 shocks all round. these are way too hard im thinking of getting rid of them. and doing something differant.
GTI seats
electric fuel pump
corolla carb
probally more but nothing exciting.
sorry for putting it in this section i just normally only come this part of the forum. can someone please move it if its a problem.
thanks

Nice project plan mate, I discovered this little gem on the net last night and if I were to start again it'd be the setup I would run

You could use this kit, and fit feroza rears instead to save hassle of finding yk springs, from memory they are the same length. I think this is what Redzook used on his old tin top with roza leaves.

i have done bare metel resprays on a few cars now and they take a lot longer than the 2 weekends that iv worked on this car and got it this far allready.i did grind where the dents where, its just if u keep sanding the paint of you have to go all the way to the endge. so not werth the time when im just going to dent the car some more later on. maybe should of mensioned that i worked in a panel shop for 4 years.want33s wrote:Bog sticks to bare metal a LOT better than it does to old paint.
Don't be surprised if slabs of bog peel out over time..
As Dee said, cut out the arches and fit the WT flares higher than stock... Will allow larger tyres later without having to cut freshly painted sheetmetal.
Jas.
i was thinking of chopping the guards up a bit but from the top of the inner guard to the lip of the guard their is probally only about 2-3cm to gain from when i had a quik look.
that rocky road kit looks awsome grpabt1 that might be a plan except i would not buy the kit as im not rich probally just try to make it bit by bit.
im not a great fan of spoa so i would go the spring under
im guessing they are using WT diffs in those conversions any way to be able to fit 33's, maybe i could use lux diffs with the yj spring conversion and keep it spring under.
Alot of the yanks use toyota diffs and dana 44's (jeep) and the kit can be used SPOA and SPUA. It'd be perfect for a QLD car being about 2.5 inches lift (would sag an inch over time or with leaves removed) SPUA, I want another zook to build now :(

i dont know what flares to put on it now cause last night when i was snooping through some jeep sites looking for jeep springs i picked up some tj jeep flares at a real good price.
so options are weld brackets on for plastic WT flares.
or weld up the indicator holes in the front fenders and run the jeep flares with some wheel spacers as well to fill the flares.
also seen they sell fiberglass leafs for the jeeps. they would get killer flex.

Please explain.lexplay wrote: also seen they sell fiberglass leafs for the jeeps. they would get killer flex.
PS. TJ flares look stupid, but if you want the easy way out, then they will work.

yea check this link http://www.bc4x4.com/inthenews/default.cfm?ID=138
they are even longer than standard yj springs but if i was going to go all out they would be cool

i was looking at the yj kit from rocky road as well and was going to use hilux springs. they are the same size but couldn't find out where the yj diff pin is on the diff. so now i'm working on my mate to make up a set of mounts to suit the hilux springs.
if your thinking about hilux diff and going spua why not landcruiser 60's diffs? off set center in the back so no rear drive shaft problems, spua stock and i'm pretty sure the front has the same spacing as a wt but with 70 mm wide springs

cheer up emo kid
They have a bigger pumpkin and sometimes wider is not better when your trying to keep it legal (or sort of). I guess thats why he's talking about using hilux.
Don't forget MQ's work but you are going to be limited somewhat by aftermarket support. They have a centre'd pumpkin as well. I'll let the victorian's elaborate. They should be plenty tough for WA wheeling.

MQ rear is offset to driver, like a zook rear.

From memory, early lux (solid front axle) diffs are 55" WMS-WMS, the later IFS rear axles are 58" WMS-WMS.

im still undesided on what diffs im going to run, theirs so many options but so many pro's and con's. i got those TJ flarres the other night and put them up to the car and theirs no way ill be putting those on until i go some wider diffs and bigger rubber so WT flares it is for now.
at the moment the car is registerd, i would like to keep it that way but its only a weekend warrior any way so not really fussed if its legal or not.

thats the sort of shit that screws everyone up....people wonder why we can't engineer shit....you relise that stuff like tac is part of an engineers report and not of your license?lexplay wrote: at the moment the car is registerd, i would like to keep it that way but its only a weekend warrior any way so not really fussed if its legal or not.

Looks awesome mate.
Just a quick question, can you explain maybe some pic's of how you pulled the dents with the washers. I've seen it done this sort of thing done but with a slide hammer. Just wondering how you pulled it I guess. Was it just with some serious beefcake and a trusty set of pliers.. etc.

Joe is sayin that whjen people are buildin a rig and say it's registed but not too worried if it only turns into a bush rig cause then if you kill one in another car your not covered by stuff you would be if you where in an engineered car.......Right joe?
