Would it be cheaper for the overseas teams to maybe buy/build a truck over here and just fly over then the cost would have to be a little bit lower, keep the truck in storage somewhere fly home, if you want to sell it you could sell it........
just a thought ;)

i think you trucks are amazing, i must have watched the dvd 20 plus times and everytime notice something diffrent that iwa nt to do the truck,
is there a new dvd coming out?
Def look @ doing a swop......otherwise you will struggle like we did with clearance and agility......we used Toyota Hi-Lux on our Suzuki Vitara....and believe Warner used a Toyota Land Cruiser hybrid 60/80 series on his Prado.
Good to hear u'r enjoying the DVD....this years should be out by August and at least rain didn't spoil the week at all this year...so there should be lots of action.

We looked at it after 2005 and it came up again in when we started thinking about 2008. The conclusion was that it's simply too expensive, mainly because paying for someone to work on your vehicle rather than working on it yourself is always going to be far more expensive. Then you have the problem of not knowing the truck or the equipment that well when you get there.

Shipping a vehicle adds to the stress when it goes wrong but financially it's a small part of the commitment.

Hey MG, Send Merrick an e and ask him...... merrick@throughthegears.net
I think the exchange rate is still roughly 45-50 pence to the oz $....postage shouldn't be more than $10 for a DVD I'm sure.

You can usually get the OBC DVD in the UK - Give it a month or so for the distribution to make it over here.. The DVDs are usually available from some of the Land Rover / off road specialists such as Maddison 4x4 (Thirsk, North Yorks) or Devon4x4, or mail order from some of the Land Rover / off road magazines online shops.

Not received my competitors copy of the DVD yet but got a mail order copy from Devon 4x4 here in the UK which I just quickly skimmed through.

Fantastic 4x4 action, some good shots and sounds of our Land Rover.

Some good (if slightly embarrassing) shots / interviews with myself and Dave.

(They didn't need to show me falling down (twice!) but it happened so there it is... and cursing too! I said a lot more at the time, I can tell you! :D )

At least they got our names right! :) - there were a number of incorrect captions and commentaries, including model of our Land Rover (NOT an S1, it is a Defender!) But hey, it got put out pretty quick so I can forgive 'em.

it brought back some awesome memories. Just got to get back over there and do it all again.... in a few years when the bank account has recovered!

G8 to hear u got a copy Pam, your compet. copy shouldn't be far off....ours arrived today also Mal...
Good to hear u happy with your coverage...aren't there always embarrasing bits u wish they'd left out!!!
I'm busy debating if I should take a peep or be good and wait & watch it with E.
I know it's going to make us heartsore to think it's our last time...and all the good times will come flooding back too......but we have given so much to the obc over the years (Blood sweat and plench $$$) (could of bought a house by now). ;) ...
it's going to be good to have 6 months leading up to and "May" itself, back from now on...not forgetting the repairs that are done on return. Still all 9 OBC's have and always will remain the most fantastic experience/adventures with the best people, we have ever had....and we wouldn't of swoped it for quids.
Sadly our truck hasn't been off-road since....but admit to really getting itchy feet to go bush soon.

Enjoy everyone!

Did anyone read the paper they got with there DVD???

"This is also agreat opportunity to share with you what i have in store for the Outback Challenge in the future. We are still in development stages but i can give you a insight into how the event will look"

The event will NOT be held at different properties at the same time,we will be moving as a group to each of the 3 or 4 locations during the week. This change has many benefits

1.Competitors although competing during day in groups will all be together for the duration of the event and camp together

2.Spectators can tag along and follow with you

3.Scores will be progressive at each location

4.dediacted onsite recovery & medical teams

5.Special stages still as long as before and a priority

6.CCDA rep onsite for marshalls & competitors

7.easier for press & film crews

8.Competitor group will be smaller 30 cars plus internationals

9.Still two classes

Anyway have a read of the paper that came with the vid

I read that, will change the event but the limit on numbers probably won't be a problem for them at the price their charging and were getting less and less each year, this year only a t-shirt and winch dampner, and we didn't even get a copy of the DVD for the Navi's, i guess i'll just have to burn an illegal copy for him. If they get any TIGHTER their arses will squeak when they walk.  :x

he he Coighty............we r just so glad we enjoyed 'the good old days'.....and experienced the uniqueness of the obc that Ron Moon started with.
Being self sufficient, a test of survival and endurance to get thru the week of sheer hell, was what is was all about and FUN!
Altho we can understand why the vdH's are changing the format, cos it'll save a lot one way and another ;) BUT surely it'll be too much like Cliffhanger ....apart from loosing the special Group team spirit/ comaraderie, which we found, was so lacking @ CH.

It will also eliminate the battlers....favouring those only with big $$, full back up sponsors and workshop crews...trucks will continue to be high tech and faster still......but then that's progress and good luck to them.

Question for Wormie (Norm) .....what Winch mods did u have mate????....we want what u had.....crickey, talk about fast!!!!
Check out how he shot up ss6 High Mount !

Believe it or not Celia thats a low mount winch with some work done to the planetary gears, and twin motors, which is why Norm wasn't in Trophy class.

The winch wormy had was a rough one that one of my mates is now building up here in rocky, there a fair bit different to wormies now with full air free spool and his own twin motor set-up, I just wish i wasn't so rushed with getting my car together for this year or i would have had one too. Kym Bolton should have recieved his early this week to take over to the moroccan??? challenge, and a huge back log of orders but will see a lot at the start of 2009 season. If you wanna know more or wanna get in contact with him PM me. P.S they make high mounts look like an expensive joke!
