Air Lockers Purging Diff Oil???

Post by luxbloke »

Fellas,

Anyone have the problem with their air lockers purging oil up the air hose and out the solinoid at the compressor?

I'v e got a 03 Dual Cal Hilux with front & rear. Only had them in about 6months.

Spoke to ARB and they reckon it's pretty normal... I reckon thats not real flash for such a freak'n expensive mod...

Cheers
Matt

if arb did take it back and tell them to fix it i had the same problem told arb to fix it and they did

Hi all...My last 79series i had lockers installed, and they purged oil out of solinoid.Pulled those lockers out and put in my new 79,and they dont leak,Guys said they knew why the old ones leaked.I think they said it had to do with the copper tube inside the diff.

i think ive ready many times that its the little rubber o ring that fails for whatever reason (incorrectly installed probably) which pressurises the diff, and when locker is switched off the pressure inside diff pushes oil back up the air line.

take it back, tell them to fix it and if they argue tell them if your axle seals start leaking they will be fixing them aswell.

hi matt,
the problem with oil coming up the air line to the solenoids is mostly caused by poor diff breathing.
because the air connection inside the diff at the seal housing is under the level of the oil,a diff that doesn't breathe enough through the factory breather will pressurize the diff enough to push oil back up the air line.
the first thing you must do is remove the breather fitting from the diff and change it to a barb fitting, then run a hose up high and put a small inline fuel filter on the end.
this will make sure that it is not a breating issue causing your problem.
it is possible that the airlocker seals or seal housing was fitted incorrectly in the rear, but the front diff comes from arb with the seals already fitted to the airlocker so i would doubt installation error is the cause in the front.

who fitted the airlockers?

some diffs just don't breathe properly and despite modifications internally they can still leak back up the airline.
arb sell a purge valve kit which holds about 3psi of oil in the line to the diff.this is enough pressure to stop oil coming up the line, but not enough to hold the airlocker on.this may be needed in your case.

purging

Post by 60_series_united »

they all do it. mine done it pretty much atraight after it was installed, my mates got the older style in his 60 and they do it too, u can buy a purge kit from arb its about $69 i donno wat it dose but i would rather put up with the oil than spend that much.
can any one tell me why they all sound different when unlocked like at comps you hear the trucks and they whistel and are really loud and sound cool but mine just sound like crap?

Airlocker

Post by luxbloke »

The Lockers were installed by ARB themselves.

It apears to be mainly the rear locker thats doing it...

Well thats more information than I got from the bloke I spoke to at ARB the other day...

I think i'll take it into ARB themselves considering it's still under warrenty... I just thought it was a bit strange that this bloke tells me:

"Oh, it normal... Just ignore it..." - PIGS :bad-words: - not when you pay Big $$$$ for good stuff...

If you get sick of hearing there BS you can get push in fittings that screw into the vent part of the solinoid and connect the blue line to them then plum it into the chassis as rust prevention or out where it will just drop out. But look at diff breathers first, Mine leaked oil when the breather was blocked now it's fine. another thing if he wants to say they all do it why weren't you told about the problem when buying them. ARB383 do you work at coopers plains arb sounds like your one of the few who know what their talking about.

not all arb airlockers send oil back up the air line.
if they are not set up with enough preload on the carrier bearings they will do it.if the seal housing is not set up correctly they will do it.
it all comes down to the installer and their ability to set up the locker correctly.but as i said earlier,a diff that isn't breathing enough will send oil back up the line regardless of how it is setup.

60 series-the reason your solenoids do not give off a loud pffft sound is because your airline is full of oil, muffling the air escaping the solenoid.
also the newer solenoids have a removable mesh screen in the end of the solenoid which also makes them quieter in operation.
