'08 Lux + 3 inch lift- Max tire size?
A mate of mine has a 2008 hilux. It has a 3 inch lift in it from Cal Offroad, and he's wondering what the largest tire is he can get under it?
At the moment it has the stock front bumper, but cutting that for clearance is no problems, but he doesn't really want to cut into the rear of the front wheelarch if he can avoid it.
Is it possible to get a 285/75 R16 onto it? As he's looking at this size in a Cooper

I got a 3 inch lift on my 07 hilux 4x4 and run 285/75x16 Buckshot mudders at the moment.
They are on 16x8 Steel Dynamic Wheels with a zero offset.
I did need to do quite abit of trimming at the rear of the guards to make them work 100% when offroad. The suspension is not stiff so the tyre has quite abit of uptravel when compressed.
I have since found out that the 16x8 is available now in a +20 offset so this would be a much better setup as it would tuck the tyre inside the guard abit more and when turning the wheels, away from the contact areas at the rear of the front guards by 20mm.
Im considering getting another set of wheels in this size and offset and running 34/10.5x16 Swamper LTB's as soon as I shop around for a decent price.
with a +20 offset, it should just clear the edge of the upper control arm which is another area to watch for clearance.

I rckon it sits nice, with the 34's it'll just fit and work offroad but that'd be the absolute limits with this setup I think without a diff drop kit or SAS

yeah, Ive cut out bit more than that and did some panel modification inside the guards too. works an absolute dream now.
By the looks of that pic, he might still rip the front bumper off when the suspension travels upwards as it dont look like he cut enough.
before I fitted me arb bar, i too had the front bumper and had to take a good chunk of the bottom corner closest to the tyre.
he'd be better off with a bar of some sort for more clearance.
and tell him to get some black sunnies, he'll cry when he scratches those bling rims.

the pic from the side was before the cutting, we'd just stuck them on there. the bling rims will stay, this is just a DD/beach car. he has this for when he really wants to wheel
i agree, with the 285's and the auto first gear low range doesnt give you adequate engine braking down hill. everywhere else its fine, the diesel has more than enough torque.
4.1:1 ratio would be ideal but nobody makes em, only 4.56 and 4.88 from the states, but thats too tall for everyday driving and 35's would be great with them but not anytime soon.

thats why I got the auto chunks....I knew I was gonna fit bigger rubber and didnt want to risk wrecking the stock clutch too soon, it'd be another headache to replace.
then again i would have had the benefit of a better 1st gear than the auto's first........oh well.

My boss bought an 06 auto, but got the shits with auto after a while so traded it in on an 07 manual. I didn't mind the auto but found there was a bit of a lag sometimes when you went to take off (265s and Steinbauer P-Box) and going down steep hills in low range you had to ride the brakes which was less than ideal. The manual flies with a Beaudesert 2 3/4" exhaust and the Steinbauer P-box with 265s (gets going faster with 245s though), but initial take off is painful and you have to use first low range on most downhill descents, but it hauls ass up most inclines in 2nd low!! The box has already been out once for a leaking rear main seal on the motor (10k) and is noisy and notchy now (20k) so will be up for some more warranty work soon! Hopefully someone brings out some gears for these soon as there are plenty getting around with big rubber that desperately need them!
there are gears for them, but the ratios arent ideal for us here.

from typower Sunshine, here in Melbourne. They are Dynamic wheels 16x8 with a zero offset, payed 105 bux each for them.
Have found out in the last month that Dynamic now make a 16x8 with a +20 offset but only in white. "Might" fit a narrow 285 or if you get aftermarket Upper control arms from the states for more clearance you'll fit a wider 285 and still be within the flares.
pity they dont make em in black, the +20 that is.
