Cable Lockers

Post by SIM79 »

Below is link to a U.S.A OX cable locker. Is there any cable lockers availble here in Australia? Could one of these lockers be modified to fit into a Patrol axel? Also could a air locker be converted to a cable locker?

I have fitted these and they are over rated. From memory they only suit dana style diffs also.

You can only run 80/90 gear oil or they do not dis engage, the spring inside is piss weak. The cable is very short also, they are made for LH drive, we fitted some to RH drive TJ's and the cable was only just long enough and put the leaver around knee to mid shin high on the tunnel.

I would stick with AIR/PRO lockers, especialy in a patrol.

Cost wise not worth the effort in the jeep either.

The cable sticks out front like a hoop, good to get caught.

Just to simplify things,I want selectable locker with no elctrical issues, no air compressor problems, no air leaks. With a cable there would be lot less things to go wrong.

Use locktite hydraulic sealant, I think its 560. Also use good quality fittings. No leaks.

Airlockers can be set up with mechanical pneumatic switches - so no solenoids. (RE 4x4's buggies are set up like this)

Use the heavy duty airline kit

Use an engine driven compressor

Now you're down to 1 pressure switch (which are super reliable) and one relay to run the clutch on the compressor.

I undertand your point, but cables aren't always the answer - those OX locker cables will jam if the cable takes a knock up near the cover.

No, an air locker couldn't feasibly be converted to operate by cable.

Early factory diff locks on 70 series cruisers were cable operated.

I find the solinoids more reliable then the air switches, and less air joints.

HD air line is a must, or get them made by a hose mob, pertek ect I had a pair made cheaper then the cost of 1 arb kit.
