I have the Explorist 600.

Biggest piece of crap EVER.

It wont hold satilites, wont run with the laptop (ie hold coms port) and the menu system is just weird.

On the other hand the maps are good, just the unit is F;&^ing usless.

Garmin Map60csx.
Super easy to use and work well.
It is a very popular unit with Geocachers.
I have the older version without the x (swappable memory cards)

I have a Magellan Meridian Platinum. Had it for about 5yrs now. In that time it has been very reliable. It dosent use the latest Sat rx. But is still very good. Usually have to be in the bottom of a deep valley or thick cover for there to be an issue.
I use it in my patrol and used it as a speedo. So it went for one stage of not being turned off in 3mths (power was hardwired to AUX batt). But was used every time the car was driven for 2-3yrs. And I now use it on my dirt bike. Seems to be going well still.

Also the maps on it a very accurate. There are not many tracks or roads I can not find. It want do turn by turn. But it will tell you exactly where any road is in aust (excluding new estates and roads).

....sadly I have to say don't do the Magellan - I'm waiting for my second replacement GPS in one year....and waiting....and waiting...not impressed as I needed it for comp and rec use. Older models may have been very good, but I think Magellan has dropped the ball on the Explorists.

I'm going with a GPS mouse and PC for in-car use and will get a Garmin for out of car use in future. Work has a Garmin - three years, absolutely no problems whatsoever, fast, accurate and reliable...

I dont know if its just because I'm used to Garmin but I recon they are a lot simpler and easyer to use than the Magelins. I have a 10 year old Garmin handheld (GPS 2+) and it's still working great. Recently used a Garmin 2010 and 2006c, both dead easy to use and seem to be great GPSs (espeshly the 2006c because it's colour).

I have never tryed maps with the Garmins, but I hear it can be a bit of a pain to set up (Id like to know more on how to set up maps with Garmin, I'm going to start looking into it)

What sort of unit are you looking at? In car mounted or hand held?
Its not a bundy!
