stock gearing and bigger tyres
stock gearing and bigger tyres
hey all , iv searched but cant find definate answers, iv sold my vitara and plan on gettin a sierra. how will it go with 235 75 15s? ie, will the gearing be ok around town or will it need transfer gears? and will they fit with no lift? i found this size good on the vit but bit worried bout the sierra as they are slow on stock tyres! id like to do gearing and tyres but cant afford to jus yet.
235/75s would be bearable, but only just... youll find yourself using 4th a lot more than you'd expect on highway use.
i ran 215/75's for ages and went loads of places on them... if tyres and gearing is a plan down the track, perhaps get a smaller tyre for now, then go 31's and gears later =)

I ran 235/75/15 for a few years, I hated every minute of it.
5th gear on the highway was useless, unless it was a very smooth road surface, with no headwind.
I never used 4H offroad, if I did, all I could smell was burning clutch.
Driving around town wasn't too bad, but I did have to ride the clutch a bit every time I took off. I'm really surprised the clutch is still ok.
You will probably have to trim the outside bumper bracket to clear the tyres and massage the firewall slightly. I did have a 2" suspension lift though.
But saying all that, I did put up with it for a few years
I now have 4.16 gears, which bring the gearing pretty much exactly back to stock. I wish I had put them in sooner.
With the dollar so good at the moment, they are cheap as.
I got mine here -> http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com

With a 1.3 and 235's didn't bother me a bit, I ran em for quite a while, could cruise in 5th as well as suzuki can. The ONLY reason I would not do it again is becuase I would want a bigger tyre. Bit if I got a cheap set .. I would be on em like a fat kid on cake.

i have 31's stock gears and a gti engine. it is bad!!! no torque.
for example, in adelaide there is a freeway which goes up to the hills, so it is long and steep climb. i struggle to hold 80 in 4th. with 215/75r15 's i could hit about 125.
it is a piece of poo when cruising too. it can hold 100 on a good road no headwind in 5th, but it is a struggle. (full throttle)

ive test driven it up and down the street clocked 70kph on the speedo, dont know how fast i was ACTUALLY goin but it did that in 5th ok i guess...
taking off from a standstill is a pain, high revin to get it movin!!!
oh and its a 1.3 swb sierra

just beat a Marlin in a swimming race
A correction box, or a post it note on your dash, or a GPS, or search on calibrating speedos, there's way you can make it read correct for one speed with adjustments to the speedo unit itself.

i daily drive my stock 1.3 sierra with 235/75s. on road its not too bad. freeways are annoying. have to use 4th on big hills, but im in 5th 95% of the time. a sierra in general doesnt sit at 100 that easily anyway..
offroad i NEVER use 4H. 1st gear 4L doesnt crawl that well either, which is not the best when your trying to go down steep hills but i still go everywhere all the other 4wd's go!
