gearing calculations (hopefully new stuff lol)
gearing calculations (hopefully new stuff lol)
Alright i have a coily i have 30's i have a g13bb i havs standard gearing.
I used to have an 81 model with standard drivetrain 235/75 r15s and 1.3 5 speed. i was very happy with the performance of this car on and offroad the coily is however way to high geared in low range and struggles to sit at 110. Now i am not interested in crazy rock climbing abilities just better than what i have currently.
i guess i am just after standard performance or similar to my old 1 litre.
i understand that diff gearing will be a major problem because they are 3.9 compared to 4.11.
anyway i guess my main question is would i notice much difference if i was to swap a 1 litre case or wt case in and has anybody got a fully list of what i would need to do either of these swaps.

Best bet is to go with a 1L case, it's going to give you about an 18% reduction, so you will end up with slightly lower gearing overall on 30's then completely stock. A 1.3L WT case is only going to give you about a 6% reduction which isn't enough.
Yes you will notice a difference, i run a 1L case in mine with 32's. It still sucks, but it's at least drivable and doesn't feel like you're trying to start in 2nd gear all the time.

If God did not intend for us to eat animals, then why did he make them out of meat?
Spamwell, It's not the diffs that are making the difference.
3.9 to 4.1 is only a 5% difference.
The transfers are a different story though.
1-litre Sierra Stock (SJ-40): 1.580, 2.511
Coily Sierra Stock (SJ-80): 1.320, 2.123
Sierra Stock 1.409 2.268
It's correct to say a 1.0 case has the best stock gearing, but you'll need a switch light 1.0 case so you can swap flanges around to get your jackshaft etc to work. The non 4WD light cases have the same gearing but have smaller flange splines so there's no interchangeability.
Personally, I'd be looking for a WT case as this already has no drum handbrake hanging off the back and the same flanges as you have now. With the strong $ and very low cost of gears, I'd throw some 4.9 gears in it (so you'll have the same road gears as a 1.0 case) and enjoy the gearing off road.
I've done a 1.0 case into coiler swap, but the owner ended up going to transfer gears anyway so there wasn't really all that much point in the starting with the 1.0 case.
