Shock options for GQ 4 inch lift
Shock options for GQ 4 inch lift
Looking for info or opinions on shock options other than tough dog to suit a LWB GQ. If any one knows about this your feedback would be appreciated.
Cheers

Do you like a comfort ride, firm controlled ride or something in between?
Are you interested in flex at all?

If you want flex then Tough Dogs are not the go because they have a big internal bump stop. You would get about the same flex as stock.
Procomps would give the flex and they give a nice comfortable ride but not as good control for cornering.
Dobinsons 4-5" lift shocks give great control, a bit firm for some. Not quite as much flex as the Procomps.
EFS Extremes are an option. I haven't measured them but I think they would give similar flex as the Dobinsons.
Boss adjustable shocks are not on the market yet so not an option at this time but something that may be worth waiting for.
All these shocks I recommend for a 4-5" lift depending on what I think the customer wants.

Tough Dog 730mm long 490mm compressed = 240mm travel
Procomp 710mm long and 420mm compressed = 290mm travel
Procomp 745mm long and 440mm compressed = 305mm travel
More travel then the longest Tough Dog available.
Tough Dog 820mm long and 525mm compressed = 295mm travel
Procomp 820mm long and 480mm compressed = 340mm travel
Procomp 895mm long and 505mm compressed = 390mm travel.
Tough Dogs have their place but not ideal for flex.
By the way, you got something stuck in your tread.

a patrol on 35's cannot use the up travel of a 820 tough dog before the tyre hits the chassis so altho the pro slops look better on paper they actually dont add any travel and handle poorly
its great to look at numbers on paper but when you get out there n mod the cars then drive them you will see it wont work
kinda like the theory vs practice thing

Procomp shocks were never built with GQ's in mind and therefore do not have valving as accurate as it could be. The shocks used in a GQ were designed for a different application.
Ride pro do a good shock and have the ROX shocks with stiffer valving for more extreme applications.
EFS are hard to beat with there 3yr 100,000kkm warranty.
Dobinsons are a quality product and give a good ride.

Have you fitted offset rims?
Boss shocks have a 41mm bore, 60mm body, 22mm shaft, 2mm thick steel, steel 12 way adjuster that won't break off. It will have female threads at each end so you can screw in the end you want to suit any vehicle including the Cruiser. You can also screw in heim joints for the longer shocks so you don't put any side loading on the shock. Lengths available up to 800mm extended at this stage. They are a foam cell shock and they can be run up side down so there is less unsprung weight.
If they turn out half as good as I expect them to they will be very popular.

they sound good shane
any guess on price?
yeah the car in those pics had offset rims, and was on 5 inch coils and 770 tough dogs at that time
coils just dropped out on full down travel (were tied in) and never hit the internal bumpstops on compression
