gq,80 series or troopy for a tourer ?

gq,80 series or troopy for a tourer ?
ok guys i know this has been covered but be buggered if i can find it!
i am wanting to build up a touring 4wd that is still capable for the tracks now i have a 6.2l chev to go in what ever 4wd i choose so motor is not really an issue.
i have had 3 mq patrols which is pushing me towards a gq and i know they are strong and generally honest !
then there is the 80 series which is comfy and pretty comparable to the gq maybe not quiet as strong off the showroom floor but still a tough unit
then there is the land cruiser troopy the down side is leaf springs! but do the positives outweigh the leaf springs.
i would like to know if any one has made a troop carrier comfy to ride in please give me advise and is the hight an issue for tracks i would be aiming to fit 33s so nothing to serious

I'm with the 1% on the otherside. had a pajero, hilux, 4runner, had an 80 as a work car and 3 mates and a father inlaw with cruisers so plenty of traveling in them, and on my first GQ now.
We do about 35-50 thousand a year, and similar to what you sound like you want. nothing extreme, just capable and comfy.

And with the squarer shaped dash, i find that they are that little bit more roomier and comfy.

They're not the best motors IMHO.
Especially the 6.2. It's a very noisy, heavy and hot way of getting 120Kw/400Nm

In what way is it more reliable than the 2H, 1HZ, or Td42 that will be in whatever you choose to buy?
A 6.2 is going to be a very old motor - 1980's - , with some design flaws (glowplugs breaking and falling into the cylinders immediately spring to mind)
mating it up to a gearbox that's appropriately geared (Much lower revs than the japanese diesels) and strong enough for the clutch engagement torque of the 6.2 won't be easy or cheap.
It's going to significantly increase front axle load (maybe not a problem on the GQ, but a big problem on a post 91 75 series loaded for touring)
When your rolling along the highway you need stuff all power. When you're in the dunes your mostly rolling along in High 1st or low 3rd/4th.
If your touring, stock is the go.

nothing wrong with the GQ if that is what your budget allows for. But the 80 Series is a nicer vehicle to tour in but you do have to pay abit more for it. Comes down to your budget I reckon and what sort of mods you want to do. For the difference in price you can allocate a bit more to mods and more importantly servicing and getting either them back into good and reliable condition for long distance travellling

well i do all mods myself and i was thinking 3-4 inch lift with either gq-80 as i would like to go do some tracks around the place aswell i have found a gq in reasonable condition for a decent price. which fits in very nicely with budget and already has the lift i want and leaves me cash for other mods

I much prefered the long distance handling of the GQ over an 80. I have not drivin a 80 offroad much but I put lots of long distance K's on one onroad.
Landcrusier "lurch" through corners is a PITA and I found the directional stability slightly tiresome (Vehicle was pretty new at the time .. sub 20,000k's) I also preferd the feel of the nissan gearbox.
Power and economy in the Crusier with 6 people and luggage were quite OK though. The Nissans I have driven long distance have been non turbo diesal ie .. economical and slow or petrols not slow but thirsty.
There is no doubt in my mind that the nissans and yota's are both decent trucks, the yota has a better built body with fewer squeaks and rattles .. but the Nissan has a better driveline, and over all will be less likely to leave you stranded.

Go a Troopy, you can pick them up cheap now. Mine rides really well with OME Dakar Springs and Nitrocharger shocks.
Plenty of room for gear, and able to sleep full length in the back.
The standard seats have teeth and there's no storage pockets, but fix those 2 issues and you have a go most places vehicle..
My 1HZ has done 423000km and still uses no oil between 5k changes so don't let high ks put you off too much.
Just try and beat them down on price more.

I thought the same when I first got mine but now i don't worry about it.
If you were loading a roof rack then that may cause some problems on side slopes.

I owned a patrol SWB but wanted to move up to a LWB wagon and a diesel for touring as that is what we are mainly into.
My Mrs always complained in the GQ that the passenger seat is too small and that there is not enough leg room. I always just ignored it thinking, it is a patrol look at the size of it what is she on about.
Until one day I was in the passenger seat while my mate drove. knees up against the dash and there was not as much room as I thought there was.
When we looked we test both and my mind was always open to both. The only thing I wanted was Turbo diesel. When testing take the Mrs if you have one. My mrs found there was more room in the 80 series passenger seat then the GQ, GU was not too bad but was out of our price range.
We looked for about 6 months before I found one for sale in Country NW NSW. It had a few km's on it but when it is 2nd owner for 11 year and had been maintained to a high standard I would have taken it if it was a GQ or an 80 series. It just happened to be an 80.
