Nissan Patrol 3.0L GU good or bad??????

hi everyone,

OKay every one tells me that the 4.2 L Turbo Diesels are the way to go if buying a GU for serious touring, But how about the 3.0L Turbo Diesel?

Q. Are they as bad as people say?

Ok i have been told that the pre 2002 3.0L Turbo Diesel had a few issues like Oil getting thin etc but apparently from 02 that problem was in the past is that the case?

Why have these motors been judged as a bad motor?

Im thinking of buying one can some one shed some light on them for me

they had a bad habbit of throwing a leg out of bed at about 150 000 k's.. as well as a few turbo problems.
also i have been told that the new ones have some sort of variable vane turbo which likes to fly to pieces..
01 td42 GU patrol ute, with extra bits and pieces.

I've replaced an injector pump on one around the 120k mark. 5 grand worth of pump.

even the 2.8's are better then the 3ltr :armsup: least it wont blow up in ur face. zd30 = handgrenade

pre 03 ones suffered most of the failures. not 100% on cause. seams to be either crap piston design or oil gallery design fault.
also some of the seals on the injectors where poorly made and can leak casueing thinning out of the oil which can mean turbo failure or bearing failure.

the variable turbo's can have a few issues but i would say that would be similar to all varaiable turbo motors regualrdless of make of vechile.

the fuel pumps do handle crap fuel at all and results in expencive repair bills. not much different to common rail in that respect.

a few problems arrise with the sensors which is the problem with electronic controlled motors. but there is a host mods to help with that.

Put an exhaust on a 2.8 and a bit more boost and they go hard and i have driven a newish 3.0 even given it some loud pedal and it was a slug, unlike the 2.8 stated which is my parents the 2.8 you give it some and it will GO like no tomorrow.

lol, no it won't.

a 3.0L will have more pull than a 2.8L no matter what way you look at it.

Comparing patrol motors, the only reason a TD42 can outpull a 3.0L is the difference in capacity.

RD28 isn't exactly known for its economy, power output, driveability or even reliability. ZD30's only problem is reliability. Everything else about it is tops and exactly what you would expect for what it is. Even the people who've had a ZD30 blow up will eventually admit that when it was working it was a pretty good thing.

My 2cents. And I drive a TD42.

Yom i screwed up my wording in a big way, what i meant was after all the hype i expected a really good Patrol instead it was a disappointment, if it had of been up to the hype i would have loved one in a trayback. but the 2.8 for me from hearing all of the negative sh!t on here it is really good and for power it can tow a 6m fiberglass half cab boat up any of the rangers here in Cairns, driveability it depends who is driving.

I have to say, i reckon there's some slug 3.0L's out there. Lots of them. So many people driving around with bung airflow meters wondering why they're using lots of fuel and suffering severe turbo lag until 2500rpm. This could be why.

A really healthy 3.0L will spin stock diameter tyres in the dry in 1st and 2nd! I personally found the new 3.0L utes to be rather fun to drive when given a bootful. :D

Only reason I would go for the patrol is the nicer cab and coils on the back. The toy engine craps all over it and the gearbox is crap loads better to live with.

I never compared it to the cruiser... Simply wasn't on the possible list due to the cost. Thats too much money, no matter what engine is in it. Mind you I came to the same conclusion for the GU cab chassis but I've since seen they've reduced the price considerably (by about $8000) which makes them far more desirable. too late now though :finger: you nissan.

And yes I would have been quite satisfied with the 3.0L's performance in the ute. It was quite adequate and I'm sure a better exhaust and a chip would do wonders for it. The one I drove felt tighter than a nun's you know what and reluctant to rev which is why I enjoyed thrashing it with only 12km on the clock. :armsup: Low down torque was also pretty good.

It did require alot of stirring through the gears -- its no big lazy v8 or 4.2L so what do you expect?

If I'd had gone into a dealer now and been given a sub $45,000 driveaway price I probably would have gone for it. But I'm glad I didn't because for the next few years my daily is going to be a much nicer vehicle (VW Golf :)).

i own a 2.8 with 2 3/4" exhust turbo back and im running 285/75/r16 BFG muddies and it goes hard, pretty good on the diesel (get about 800ks out of 110L) thats including a 4b run at glass house on a weekend. ) havent towed anything with it as yet. it goes just as good as the td42 off road and also on road all u need to do is give it a bit more right boot.

Ask him exactly how a better flowing exhaust causes this ultra rare phenomina. Just a tip, if the answer is overboost, well, we've know about this for ages as it is is a trait of all variable geometry turbocharged vehicles which is easily fixed and really should be fixed to preserve the life of the motor and turbo. Its easy enough to fix I should add!
