ive had enough

ive got a 89 model sierra that runs 31 inch tyres and standard evrything else im basically after advice on how to make it more driver friendly offroad without reducing tyre size. The car will not pull 5th gear on the highway and uses nearly as much fuel as my landcruiser troopy.
http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/samdrivetrain.htm
6.5:1 gears will give a 20% reduction in high range and an awesome 187% reduction in low
Highway revs will be just a tad higher than a stock Zook and yours will pull 31's EASY.

Depends on the driving you want to do..
If you want to have overtaking power at 100km/h then a healthy engine is a must..
If you want to rockcrawl and have low gears you'd be surprised how little power you need.
My old engine made all of about 3 & 3/4 HP and was s l o w on the highway but it did fine once in lowrange.

to reply to that last comment i did use the search function and didnt find the results very conclusive.I asked for advice and was hoping that there might have been some new ideas people that people might have had im a believer if you wanna learn dont be afraid to ask questions.Fortuately there are some people on here that like to help and advise others and i thank them for that and as for those who take delight in trying to belittle the one asking the question keep your comments to yourself
troopy - get some tcase gears - im running calmini 5.14's with 31s and the gearing is PERFECT! standard 26 to 31 is 19.2% difference... calmini kit does a 18.3% reduction - so it revs a little less at 100km/hr (like, 50rpm)... but the low range is astounding! most of the low range work i've done has been in 2nd and 3rd gear =P

thank you for the info on the gears i will most likely go that way its just that ive seen one set break myself and heard of a few others but they were all series 4 rockhoppers so maybe its just that type. What really put me off was the fact that there was no warranty honoured but the reduction in low range sounds great
As mentioned previously gearing is what you need. All the failures I know of have been with various series Rockhoppers but the Trail Gear, Trail Tough etc. seem fine and there are lifetime warranties too. I went with Trail Gear for my application.troopy94 wrote:thank you for the info on the gears i will most likely go that way its just that ive seen one set break myself and heard of a few others but they were all series 4 rockhoppers so maybe its just that type. What really put me off was the fact that there was no warranty honoured but the reduction in low range sounds great

If you go with Calmini gears, you won't have any problems with strength. They're not cut and shut jobs like some of the others, they're fully engineered and manufactured from high strength steel. Don't know much about the Low Range Offroad gears but I've heard they're pretty good as well.
Cheers

There are no "cut and shut" gearsets. Apart from some very early gears (i think first gen series 1 rock hoppers) that have long since gone out of production, and the home made rock lobsters.

How good would it be if we had a thread called the bible, with lots of infomation in it, that was stickied to the top of the forum for all who can use their eyes........................................................................................
Oh wait, we do.
And there is gearing info there. Amazing.
For the smartarse that comes up with a comment that it didnt have the info they wanted, well find a thread or start a thread and PM me and i will add it to the bible if it has some good tech in it.

thats the trouble all the search nazi's jump on every new thread and fook it up so no bloody tech occurs.
have any of your guys bothered to look at the bible lately. there is no pictures in atleast 75% of the threads wich renders them near useless and every time i search for anything myself i spent 8 hours sifting shit about how everyone should search and never ever post in the forum to find the one thread that has any relevant info.
i totally agree that if someone was to post "i want to put 31's on a zook" or the like they deserve to be flamed because if you search things like that the answers are there to be found but more in deapth questions they arent.
plus things may have changed since the all so mighty bible threads were written 2-5 years ago

dont reply then and get over it, theres always going to be new people posting asking questions, its worse hearing people winge about it and the search is shit comes up with to much crap (most times)GRPABT1 wrote:For gods sake does anybody use the bloody search function these days! Anyways, i totally buggered a set of rockhopper gears in my zook after 1500 k's... that was only cause i didnt strenghten the housing. So make sure you do that!! I now have 6.5's from low range. I brought a complete transfer, ready to bolt in, with warranty for $1370.. delivered in 6 days
F&R ARB air lockers, lux diffs, 4 link coil rear, drop shackles, inboarded ranchos, stage 4 reduction gears, 35" silverstones, 9500 winch, RUF, 1.6 EFI, swimming goggles
And why do you think that is? Because people keep starting new threads all the time when there is no need! Why do you think myself and a few others have been going back through the old threads and marking them for deletion? It's to make searching easier, but it's an uphill battle with a handful of new threads every day on old subjects.just cruizin' wrote:Have you searched for anything lately, 10 000 results with 3 on topicGRPABT1 wrote:For gods sake does anybody use the bloody search function these days! Have had my Calmini 5.14's for a few years now and have given them a fairly hard time with no problems from the gears, the case or the stock mounts so far. Started out on generic 31 inch muddies and now have 32 inch Pedes.alien wrote:troopy - get some tcase gears - im running calmini 5.14's with 31s and the gearing is PERFECT! standard 26 to 31 is 19.2% difference... calmini kit does a 18.3% reduction - so it revs a little less at 100km/hr (like, 50rpm)... but the low range is astounding! most of the low range work i've done has been in 2nd and 3rd gear =P

agreed, this site has a useless search function and its not becuase there are so many threads, its because it cant find the words u give it in the topics u want and the search function for finding a member name is also as useless as tits on a bull. as much as i hate the site 'boostcrusing.com.au' coz of the timewasters and brain capacity of its users , it has a good search function. however this was only said to note to the mods to improve the search function only, the site and its users are 10/10.neil_se wrote:I agree, the simpler the topic you're searching for the worse it is. it also doesn't help when people have dump topic headings like
I've had enough
and yes I did search.
well if you did search and didn't find anything, how the hell is the next guy going to find the info you were after if when he searches for "gearing" the post called "I've had enough" doesn't come up for some strange reason or is so far down the list that he cracks the shits and asks the same Q a week after someone else
and the guy that wants to know if LJ centres fit into narrow track diffs looks for "diff conversion", leaving him with 1000 threads on hilux Vs mq Vs suzuki.
or does he search "lj centre into nt diff" which is what the topic is about.
and because you searched about suzuki diffs you knew that wt and nt diff centres are interchangable so knowing this you could assume that from "diff conversion" where you got told that lj centre don't fit into narrow track diff that they possibly dont fit into wt diffs. which means "and yes I've searched" is useless

I know that. but when 1000 results come up and you don't have 4 hours to read through them, it makes searching a whole lot easier when the topic heading relates to the content!!
