80 series booster into hilux.

How hard is it to fit an 80 series brake booster into a '93 diesel hilux, do any modifications have to be done? any advice appreciated.

Not very hard at all; just have the change the linkage to the pedal.

Mine just bolted straight in.
It is a tight fit where the steering shaft goes past it in the engine bay.
The uni on my shaft rubbed a bit when I first put it in but it self clearanced :)
Also the vacuum hose needs to be longer as the fitting on the booster is in a different spot.
Overall it is a very easy mod.

Turn it upside down and the hose fits fine ;)
Brake specialist told me it was ok to run it this way.

Well just finished installing the 80 series booster and the difference in braking is incredible, thanks for the info and also to Lukes 4x4 of LLandilo for supplying the spacer. The only problem I have now is if I hit the brakes twice very quickly I run out of vacuum, anybody else had the same problem?

This sounds interesting, my hilux brakes are TERRIBLE, can you elaborate a bit on this upgrade please? what do you need, how do you install it etc?

It was a very easy conversion , basically just replaced the original brake booster from my '93 sr5 hilux with one from an 80 series landcruiser($120 from the wreckers). Just needed a spacer plate($33.00 from Lukey's 4x4) between the booster and firewall and a longer piece of hose for the vacuum($8.00) and everything just bolted straight in.

What motor are you running?
My Commodore V6 keeps up the vacuum easy.

id say the alternator vac pump cant keep up with the bigger booster

I di this mod and had the same problem with the brake light coming on the dash if I hit the brakes a few times in quick succession. Didnt bother me as as long as you left it a second between pushes it kept vacuum and in normal driving you wouldn't be pumping the brakes 2 or 3 times a second anyway.

do the 'lux's have a vaccum cannister like cruisers? maybe a larger cannister would fix the problem...... or, on the HJ61 cruisers with the vaccum assisted clutch booster it has dual vaccum cannisters... maybe one of these would fix the problem.... or, an 80 series vaccum cannister??

I've since adjusted the brake pedal up a bit and the problem is no where near as bad as it was. Thanks for all the suggestions I may use some in the future if I have to.

Just make sure it's not holding it on any had a car come into work they had it holding slight pressure and it was enough to get the rims that heated that it melted the hubcaps off this car :D

can anyone tell me how much physically bigger the 80 series one is over the hilux one. mine is yn67 hilux and is the spacer plate necessary on all hilux's when doing this swap.

The 80 series one is about 30mm larger in diameter and 15mm deeper in comparrison to mine which is a "93 sr5 diesel ln 111. I've got no idea if all models need the spacer plate but I tried mine without it at first and everything bolted up o.k but the brake pedal was too high.

Do use run a 1" master cylinder with the bigger booster also or the original 15/16" unit? Is the bigger dualstage booster from V6 lux's and all surfs the same as the 80 series? V6's and surfs also use the 1" mastercylinder and big calipers standard.

I hav a full set of V6 brakes if anyones interested? Cheers
