Probably one for our kiwi bretheren seeing i'm moving over there soon.

Been looking at some on turners auction, are they a fairly capable off road vehicle (hunting/fishing). Which is the better petrol or diesel and is there a better model and year to look for.

Appreciate any feed back on these, I see the toyota surf is popular over there also

Thats a big ask given the range available. I started off with a non turbo 2.7D, the ifs is a weak link...too many parts, I was always replacing idler arms etc. I think the later 90-92 models 2.7DT had probs with gearboxes or auto transmissions. Comfy vehicles though!

the steering is, youve said it yourself

btw you will only have dramas with steering arms if you put some form of suspension lift in.
the lift will cause the centre link to rotate durring steering operations, which causes the tierod ends to operate outside of design parameters, then they will eventually bend

where did your hear this?? your uncles, cousins, mothers, sisters, dogs, friend of a friend???
- what is correct is the bearings in the manual box can cause dramas with HIGH km's. as with any high km vehicle

generally a good vehicle. they are light, strong and very capable.
i think the td27 engine is the pick of the bunch. some will rabbit on about how slow & guttless they are. but theres plenty of things you can do to get em going

- i will say this tho. if your planning on massive lift & tyres - its probably not the vehicle of choice. Unless you put some form of solid axle under the front of it.

True I suppose, my TD27 did have upgraded torsion bars that were wound up and higher coils in the back, it wasn't just idler arms though, was many ball joints etc.

Actually my information doesn't come from a relative mate, nor does it come from the back of a cornflakes packet, so i would appreciate it if you didn't try and be a smart ass!!
It is from a couple of club members who HAVE HAD this exact problem with auto transmissions AND manual gearboxes, specifically the 91-92 TD27T, those 'dramas' you speak of amounted to about $3000 in repairs. -dramas I wouldn't like to have.

I think they are great after all I had one for 2 years, tons of room in the back and they handle like a car, I thought about putting a live axle in mine and reckon that would make them, having said that a GQ is def the go as they are much stronger overall.

The only other thing to check is floorpan rust around the rear seatbelt mounting points. A ton of them have been failed WOF over here in NZ because of this and it's a costly job to repair. The petrol ones go alright but are very thirsty.

Very helpfull fellas, I have been watching the GQs also on trade me and they are certainly much lower ks than we find here and in general a better price.

Even seen a couple of GU shorties, now them we dont have. All seem to be 2.8s. I'll do a lot more research before buying, and pick you fellas brains a bit more.

By the way Steve. I may have scored a Terrano disc brake arse end for $100. The pathy should be ready by the summer and she will be locked both front and rear. Are you planning on coming over this way? It would be good to catch up.
