Hey i used to have a hard top sierra but have recently purchased a soft top. Just wondering how legal it is to drive around with the windscreen down?

I'm no sierra owner but i would have said if it was designed and built to have a fold down windscreen and was ADR complianced with that design then it would be fine.

However.... I can't find any reference to hinged windscreens in the either the 2nd or 3rd edition ADR's. But landies and jeeps had em and i don't recall any problem with those.

the 'design' is there but is it in the owners handbook? You have to unscrew the top bars to use the hinge.

Also having a windscreen may be an ADR, and yes it would be there but it would not be doing it's function if it was folded down

i have run mine with the windscreen down with half and no doors b4 with no hassles from the fuzz,

i have also head that if the windscreen is down, the doors need to be off or half drover style half doors, as there is nothing to support the window frame on the door, i dont know how much truth is in that, but may be sumthing to look into..

All I could find was that your windscreen has to be made from laminated saftey glass and is fitted with a wiper/washer system and a method for demisting the internal surface.

For pre 06-1989 vehicles implementation/regulation of the 2nd edition of ADR regs is entirely state/territory responisiblity. For post 06-1989 vehicles ADRs is the responsibility of the Australian Government under the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989.

That would mean that if you have a post July 1989 vehicle with a fold down windscreen it does not matter what a state copper or vehicle inspector thinks is legal???? (You just have to convince him of the fact )

Suzukigav, If your sierra is pre-1989 call your relevent state body as grimbo suggests, if its post 1989 try these guys.

Check your build plate behind your battery to see if it's pre or post JULY 89.

if your windscreen is folded down u would have no rear view mirror or visors i really doubt u could drive around with it down

alot of older model landcruisers have fold down windscreens also evan the 75 series utes it hink

I am in Vic - so it may not be completely relevant, but...

I have a memo from VicRoads addressed to me stating that it is legal for me to drive my sierra around with no windscreen attached what-so-ever as long as i have sufficient mirrors attached (i.e. side mirrors).

I faxed a written request to VSS (Vehicle Safety Standards) and they faxed back the answer to me.

My car was a 1990 Sierra at the time.

Glasses / Goggles are definately a must. Driving at anything over 50km is pretty loud as the wind passes your ears too - i.e. you can't hear what the passenger is yelling at you.
