Steering Box on HJ75

Post by Buggerific »

Hi all...

The past two weekends I've been trying to replace my steering box. First weekend i didn't have the correct seal I needed. This weekend I can't even get the drag link out of the pitman arm.

Does anyone have a suggestion of how to remove this. I've tried a couple of puller type tools, tried tapping it out with a rubber mallet... The only tool I haven't yet tried is one of those fork-like things to seperate the two. Have any of you used one of them and if so how hard was it. Because the puller thing I bought just couldn't make it budge.

I'm going to replace the tie rod end while i'm at it because by the time i get this one out it will be rooted... But any advice would be grand!

Ditch the rubber mallet. You need a BFH. If the big hammer dosn't work, heat will.

one nice solid hit on the pitman arm should shock it out. however if this don't work the tuning fork will. but this will damage the rubber normally. just make sure the fork you use will fit around the tie rod ball

yeah tried smacking the end of the pitman arm as the guy at the shop suggested but got no movement...

Think I will have to use the fork and a big hammer and just bash the crap outta it.

The only reason I didnt do it today was that I didnt have a replacement ball joint just in case i root this one.

2 big hammers, hold one against one side of the arm and hit the other side oposite it HARD!!! do not get your fingers in the way ;)

its held in on a taper just hitting it from one side with nothing solid on the other side wont shift it

then you get the fun part of getting the arm off the steer box next ;)

find somone with a press will save a lot effort,

When you've tried everything else and it doesn't work, add heat

you should be able to spring it off then, if your using big enough hammers

1 big hammer and a big lump of steel will do it to as long as its held oposite of where your hitting

So I've replaced the box and all the tie rod ends... still seems to be a bit of play, but the steering also seems a bit stiff.

It's fine when driving but when stopped the power steering is very stiff... Adjusment on the box or a dying pump?

Park it up against a gutter or something hard. Get someone to move the steering wheel while you watch the steering joints. Watch them all. Remember a little in each will add up.

If it all seems ok from there then adjust the play in the steering box. It's a 17mm nut (i think) and a screw you can turn with a flat blade screwdriver. Turn it 1/4 turns at a time and re evaluate.

Also make sure your wheel bearings are adjusted ok. And that all the caselated(sp) nuts with split pins have there split pins and are tight.

Yeah but what about the whole stiff steering thing? If stopped the steering is very stiff, either something is way too tight or maybe the pump is goneskys

If the pump was working alright before you changed the box I doubt the pump is the problem all of a sudden. Have you bled the system properly?
