DoubleTough/Chromo etc breakages

Post by zookimal »

Question to those out there running upgraded sierra axles.

Has anyone broken one in regular trail use? Particularly a front?

Looking at upgrade options now and concerned about front breakages as unless I buy a spare set a repair becomes a bigger issue.

I don't tend to regularly bust a lot of standard parts on 31s but looking to upsize to probably a 34in swamper (tall and narrow anyway). Finding a 31 is too small for a couple of particular rock steps I regularly drive and need a bit more tyre. Drive very little mud, mainly rocky trails etc, not pure rock as such. Further info that may help, WT, 1.3L, 6.5s, currently lockright F & R, prob going to go mini-spool rear, LR front.

perhaps rear axles up front is a cheaper option given you're not breaking stuff now?

What he means is 27 spline axles up front, but you have to replace your spider gears in the front diff too to fit them. The rear diffs have 27 spline axles

Calmini make the cheapest aftermarket axles I think, in 26 spline like the rear, they woudln't be the strongest and don't come with CV's but may be right for what you want. I think alot of the victorian guys run the same 34's as you're looking at on stock axles but in low traction muddy trails not rock.

I'd be surprised if you manage to break doubletoughs. We've had no trouble with them running 34/35" tyres, and there was a thread recently on Pirate with a guy running 36's and pulling burns etc on rock and he's had no trouble either.

I have no experience with clamini cromo rear axles, but it seems that on high traction surfaces with stock stuff you need to know when to get off the throttle if it starts to bounce, axles and rear diff can be marginal.

Just make sure your swampers can't grab anything on the chassis/body. If the tyres grab the car, it's much easier to break somehthing - I've broken 2 cv's this way.
