I'm running these in a 29" in Tassie.
They cost around $150 a tyre. I've had them since January and there is bugger all wear - they look almost brand new.
They have a nice, open tread and even though the "side biters" are small, they work pretty well in the mud down here.
If you don't want to spend the dollars and go to Silverstones or something, then these may be the go

i've found the coopers to be great so far - dead quiet on the road, grip awesome on wet roads, definitely grip well on rock - i've done minor clay/mud stuff and they paddled through that fine (up to the diffs in mud/slush for a 50m stretch). They did seem to dig in to the bottom of the mud though, not float above it - which is what you want, unless the mud is really deep i spose =P but they cleaned themselves out almost instantly.

If your'e cheap definitely have a look at the the federal couragia's -they're probably the most aggressive cheap non remould available.
If you do lots of slick, greasy climbs, you won't beat centipedes or their copies.
As an all round offroad tyre- if you want a swamper, buy a swamper - you won't regret it.
If you want a cool alternative - have a look at simex MP trekker - a 7.50 16 version of the 'pede. These would be an amazingly sweet suzuki tyre- much better than a 10.5. (you'd need 16" rims though)

The only thing better than a MT-117 is a MT-117 beadlocked at 3psi.

Claws are overrated.
They're not too bad when run backwards on the front (Mercedes new this in the 1950's- have a look at old unimogs) but they're stiff, noisy, and don't want to hook up IMHO.
No question, the pedes and their copies own slick clay type surfaces, not surprising, they were designed for winch challenge stuff, ad that's what the stages often comprise.
however, they're too bad on rock and in the dry to work as a recreational tyre. IMHO.

Had a look for early unimogs, see what they were doing, found this one, only one with this type of tyre, seems to be pretty much the way the things should be, not backwards.

A 33" claw looks like a 36" iced donut out at Glasshouse in the wet.
My 117's grip sandstone and granite really well although I have Staun beadlocks and run 0-5psi.
They are better in the dry than the wet on rocks but what tyre isn't?
Even when wet I can get up slimy clay covered rock faces that hiluxes on MTR's & Patrols on MTZ's can't.

How do the Q78's go on the rocks Steve ? I may be looking at upsizing next year but want to keep the tyres as narrow as possible which means they would be about the best option.

If I were to look for a muddy, Id look to a much wider tread pattern than claws, the bit of mud I see, when getn firewood, no drama with them. Up in Darwin, mud city, recon as id go to paddles.

I run the 31x10.5 Silverstone Extremes.
They measure about 30.3" diameter not really a 31". But I knew this and am happy with it. They also do not measure the full 10.5" wide, being just under 10" wide.
I've just finished watching video footage of me driving on them recently, and it has become apparant to me that I need to let them down a bit more than 10psi, especially on the back (the front looked pretty close to right), they could bag out a little more.
Also they love to dig holes as soon as I lose traction, which can worsen the situation. Not a problem on a hard surface, but a PITA in dirt.
Once they start digging, the rocks tear away at the leading edge of the tread blocks (quite soft rubber).
From what I have gathered everytime I've lost traction it has not been due to the tyres, but because I have open diffs and popped a wheel up.
In general I'm very happy with the tyres, and for what they cost I don't think I could do any better. There may be better tyres for some applications around but I'd be paying significantly more dollars.

Wheeling on completely wicked angles, without even looking stable.

I used to run mine at 6psi, with two people and a load of spares in the back of my WT no worries.
federal couragias are a sweet cheap tyre as well.
