I've been having some problems of late taking a bit longer to start. Used to start bang on half a turn but lately it's been taking anything from 5 or 6 plus turns.
Did a search and it seems RS brushes in the starter are a common problem, pulled it out and stripped it, everything seemed ok just a bit dirty. Cleaned it all up and slapped it back in. Went to put the cable back on and it spun the motor up. The solenoid is a sealed unit so I can't see how I've stuffed that up? The posts were a bit loose with the nuts off but that's the only obvious thing. I checked it with the multimeter and there's a short there for sure.
New solenoid or have I farked something up here?

glowplugs would be the first thing, then the relay's. i think they run dual stage glows so need to check the relay and timer for it.
failing that pump the primer on the fuel filter. see how many pumps it takes to go hard. you could have a small air leak so it takes the pump a little bit longer to suck fuel through before it starts.

I had the same proplem a couple of weeks ago especialy in the cold got it serviced and found 4 of my 6 glow plugs were dead, now starts 1st time every time. Also when you start the car put key to on pozi then listen for 2 VERY quiet clicks then try starting its the glow plugs warming up or something like that.
When you stripped down motor, were the brushes ok? There are 2 brushes that you can easily replace, but the other 2 are much more difficult. Also you can try loosening the posts and rotating them slightly then retightening. Smear the plunger with a very small amount of grease to prevent sticking. There still could be a dirty contact in the solenoid that the multimeter wont easily pick up. To be certain, connect a jumper lead from battery direct to the motor +ve but leave the original battery cable connected to operate the plunger and engage the starter motor gear. This will confirm if the motor itself is ok

I think I've found the problem. I took all the nuts off the solenoid terminals to clean it all up and the terminals move in and out about a quarter of an inch. With both terminals in all the way they short out, pull them out and it's open. I've put them back, will throw it on tonight and see if it works, if the multimeter is anything to go by though that was my problem.
Brushes are ok. Two are good, the other two are a bit low but still got a bit of life left in them. Commutator was really dirty, given that a going over with sandpaper and cleaned the groves out.

Put it back in after I got an open circuit with the two terminals, wouldn't throw out though. Then the motor stayed on which lead to the quickest nut removal ever.
Pulled the whole thing out, rotating terminals I could either get it to the throw out or an open circuit between the terminals, couldn't get both at the same time though. Got the solenoid replaced and she's working again. My starting is back to normal again, fires up with half a turn.

Where'd you get the replacement solenoid from, i have a similar issue at the moment
