steering dampener on a coily
hey i am keen to fit a steering dampener on my 98 coily, can someone send me a few picks of how it is set up on a leafy? pics of the mounting points would be great, i will have to custom fit it because they do not come on a coily.

Simplest way is to put it on the link between the wheels , most dampers can be purchased with mounting kits , they are usually u-bolt style on the steering arm and if they don't have a bracket for the diff housing you might need to make a u-bolt style clamp to fit to diff housing , not to hard to make , I welded a bolt to my housing , Cheers Paul

This is how mine is mounted on my coily, i didn't do it, it was just how it was when i got it.
One end is connected to a bracket off the pitman arm, the end end is off a bracket welded to the front cross member.
The other way would be a bracket clamped to the drag link and another around the chassis.
You won't be able to do it the way MART has posted as the tie rod on the coily is on the back side of the diff and there isn't a great deal of space back there.

You could physically fit one there, but i don't think you could position it anywhere that would clear everything. The tie rod runs fairly close to to the radius arm. If you clamped the damper towards the passenger side on the tie rod, the bracket would hit the radius arm when turning right. It runs that close on full suspension travel that the castor correction on mine is enough to actually make the tie rod just touch the radius arm on full travel whilst turning. You then can't turn it around and mount it the other way because the damper would then hit the diff center if clamped to the tie rod towards the center when turning left.

I was thinking you could tuck the large end in on the inside of the left trailing arm and then the shaft towards the diff centre , but in front of the arm , avoiding crossing the trailing arms , I would cut the metal sheath of the shaft or buy one without the cover to give a tighter fit , has anyone done this , Cheers Paul.

The distance from the inside edge of the radius arm to where the tie rod passes underneath the diff/tail shaft is about equivalent in length to what my damper is in the neutral position in my pic above. You'd have to bring the mount more towards the center to allow enough clearance so that it doesn't potentially hit the radius arm. With that you then need to fix the other end to the diff housing. You can't go parallel, because the diff is in the way, you can't go downwards because it would just hang lower then the axle housing. The only option would be to angle it upwards over the diff, which would then just cause clearance issues with the sump.
