Considering a late model Gen I Pajero as a daily driver and highway tourer and as I will soon have an arm out of action for a bit with a shoulder reco I'm looking at an auto model. Searches reveal that with the 3.0L I could expect 12-14L/100km out of a manual, with sedate driving what do the autos return?
It's probably sacriledge to say this on here but I doubt I'll ever modify it save for a set of stock-size ATs, as I have the Zook to bash around in. I just want a comfy vehicle that doesn't tire me to death when I'm driving around, and that has a few mod cons like A/C, PS, etc. So I guess what I'm looking for is an absolute best case scenario fuel consumption.

3.0L V6 auto fuel economy?

My Gen1 SWB 3.0L A/T with a fresh engine returns 20mpg or ~12L/1100km. In order to get that level of mileage performance, it's necessary to keep speed at 65mph or 105km/hr since the Gen1 has the aerodynamics of a refrigerator.
If you have an early transmission, there may be a slight mileage benefit from swapping transmissions to the '91 (US year) which has a lockup torque converter. The downside may be that the engine can't rev into the power band in O/D at low rpms.
Anyway, I'd figure on 12L/100km if the engine is healthy and you drive reasonably.

At highway speeds and light traffic we returned 10.5 litres per 100 ks and today I fuelled it after a week of short trips and city use.. the figure was 15 litres/100 ks.
I can't complain about the highway use. It is amazingly strong and built like a truck when you poke about in the greasy bits. Mine has now done 88 000 ks and is in good health. I have yet to learn how the automatic ( INVECS 2 ) learns my driving style, but after giving it a bootful it began to change in a sharper less slurred way.
I am running the maximum tyre pressure at the moment to even out some tread wear ( the result of lack of rotation as it steers nicely )and that makes it a bit choppy, and the tread noise is sometimes out of line with the general quiteness of the rest of the machine.

Unless it it being towed or downhill, or about to blow up from running far to lean, getting lower than 10 won't happen IMHO.
Me, on the highway with 5 speed, can get around 11 but that is on straight flat roads drving like your grandma at 95 - 105km/h.
As mentioned before, I'd say 12 - 14, and I work on about 13 long term, bit higher with more 4WD or round town.

Just returned from about 1000 ks towing a light camping trailer at highway speeds and minor country roads.. used 11 litres per 100 ks in a V6 Challenger auto.
Had the auto serviced yesterday. That makes a difference to sharp gear changes. I have yet to really notice the INVECS system at work.. and while that is the reason for its existence.. I have yet to feel the difference.

nice, 2300 for 310K, meh as long as ur happy with it, now jack her up and bring on the 33"s , at least wack on a 2.5" exhaust, with high flow cat and muffler, it will make a difference, not so much performance but fuel economy wise, or so i found it to happen on mine dropped it bout 1.5L/100ks not much but better than nothing, besides it sounds nice now

Yeah I know it's up there in the kms but it doesn't bother me. I have no paperwork to prove it but it must have had some work at some stage, they don't get that high on the odo without blowing smoke otherwise.
I was thinking about a set of extractors and a 'zaust, 2.5in you reckon? I'm sticking to 32s, only because I want to use it to do a fair bit of on and offroad touring.
I think the 32s should bring the gearing down just enough to get some better economy on the highway. At 110kmh it sits around 3000rpm.

i didnt bother with extractors, they were gonna cost 900 alone! the other gear (cat back) cost 750 fitted at genie. 32"s are good, they come stock with roughly 29x9x15, 32"s are great, gearings fine, mine sits at 3000 at 100, do you have the 4.625 or the 4.875 gears? never driven in the 4.875 but the 4.625 are good enough for 32"s, no real lack of power
