I need ideas to take out weight in my SWB Gen II

Post by caxtrol »

Hi Guys

I need some help with ideas to take out weight in my SWB Gen II, I feel it is too heavy, and with less weight probably it performance will improve.

It is a 3.5 V6 SWB Hard Top with 33x12.5 and 4.90 diff.

One option is to change the metal bonnet by a fiber bonnet

take out the rear seats

change the winch metal cable by a Synthetic Rope Cable

to take out the rear door

to take out the A/C

and finally as a last option to transform the SWB in a J Top

someone else who can help me with more ideas

Please explain why you think it is to heavy.

IMHO that is a shit load of work to go to to remove 100kgs and most of the vehicles usefulness.

I presume you're using this for competition? At first thought, I can't think of another compact 4wd with similar power to weight ratio - are you sure you're not expecting too much?

Can you be more specific about "perfomance will improve"? Are you looking for straight line acceleration, hill climbing ability, rock crawling ability, mud, on-road fuel economy?

If you want a J-Top, buy one. Don't convert.

Hi Guys

I'm trying to assemble a Mitsu for competition in Chile, and today I find that this weighs as much, thinking that we have to put extra tank and a roll cage.

The Mitsu is a robust 4x4, but is heavy in its category, so I need to get ideas from the weight.

In Chile there is no J-Top, but I am sure that the J-Top is lighter than normal SWB.

If you were to draw weight of your Mitsu, which would, or that something would begin.

Greetings and looks forward to his aid.

I presume you're stripping the interior? Rear seats and carpet. Yes, aircon if you don't want it - compressor, condensor and evaporator. Do you want to convert it to an air-compressor?

Can you replace glass with perspex/polycarbonate sheet? Electric door locks, power windows, power mirrors?

Do you have a sunroof? If so, replace it with something lighter.

I'm not sure that the rear door isn't structural - does it affect body flexing?

Thanks Scott

It is a good question if the rear door (heavy) it is a structural part ??

somebody has an idea about it

what do you think about the bonnet, every time that I need to open I feel that it is too much heavy, I am thinking in a fiber bonnet.

I am waiting for more ideas.

Thanks

Hello Caxtrol,

I am also building a "Town Fiesta race rig" . My engine is a 4G54 2.6L carb engine, less power than your 3.5L . I started with a Jtop and will regear my Pajero to 6.17 using LC40 axles. This way it will have sufficient torque. I also plan to improve by installing free flowing intake and exhaust headers and straight thru mufflers and rejet the carbs to increase power and toque. If this power is not enough, I have on standby a 4g63T engine rated at 240HP. This is the same engine of the Lancer Evolution. I am avoiding body lift and the most minimal suspension lift so that the rig won't be top heavy and will not be easy to topple down. Instead we would do very generous fender trimming to accomodate tires up to 38". I hope this helps. :)
