GQ steering box into MQ

Post by Rosey55 »

G'day,

does anyone know if a GQ steering box is compatible with MQ? My concerns are the steering shaft spline or coupling...

I know the pitman arm is reverse tapered and different. This is a matter of custom panard I guess.

Will all the hoses screw on?
what's the chances the GQ box bolts directly in place of MQ?

Are GQ boxes capable of more output power than the MQ's or is it just the age difference or pump?

thanks

Early and late GQ's have a different box and pump. Late modle ones are same as a GU unit, so I'm told.

I highly doubt a GQ (early) Box will be anywhere near close to bolting up they are a much larger box and are further foward.

Tie-rod ends will be larger and have a larger thread.

Spline and shaft, think you'll find the GQ has a larger diameter.

As for thread's on box and pump, the Pump is alot bigger and I've not heard of them being changed, So yer no idea.

it is possible to do this conversion i have looked into it wat u really want to do is get urself a big bolt gq box as the arm on the bigger box sits down further which will give u a better angle for the steerin link and also u will need a steering link from a gq

u will need to drill and sleeve the chassis to mount the box and then cut the link down so it the right length then u can do away with all the linkages that a mq have

u may need to cut and shorten the length of the shaft from the steering wheel but get the box into position first

ive got a gq power steering box in my jigger. pretty much did as he has said. re sleeved chassis and moved the box forward around 15-20mm so i didnt have to shorten the shaft. custom made chromoly draglink runs from gq pitman down to mq tierod. pretty much drilled down 5mm on the reverse side of the tierod so the gq tierod end would fit and still screw in. not sure where we will put the dampners (2) yet, prolly run the up to the orinigal position and make a bracket to accomodate for the twin setup.

i have flipped the whole tierod so now it sits untop of the ball joints. will eventually get chromoly tierod made with gq tierod ends as the are bigger and have a bigger taper on them, making it easier to pull into ball joints.

as for the lines im getting some made up out of prolly copper and using what ever fittings will fit, running the line along under the rad up to the rb30 pump. shouldnt be that hard at all.

cheers

It is possible i've been running a GU steering box on the mq chassis to a mq front diff for about 4 years now. I did the steering box set up when i did the reverse shackle to the front springs.

Nothing bolts straight up from memory apart from the steering arms. I set the box up on the chassis to line up the steering shaft. It has worked without any problems for years now. I run a GQ power steering pump with custom hoses on custom brackets. It all looks similar to GQ steering set up now.
