Vitara Diff Ratio Change

Post by atari4x4 »

Howdy,
I'm about to do a ratio swap on my J20A vitara from 4.6 to 5.1. I have got a 26 spine front from a EFI front cut & the rear out of an early carby vitara.

Are there any traps/issues that I need to know about before pulling apart my daily driver?

Cheers
Gus

you might find you will have to machine the drivers side front input on the carrier to accept the 2.0 litre cv. and on the front left axle you may have to cut it down slightly and re-machine a circlip groove.

So what is involved in the machining of the carrier & cutting down the CV, how do I know if I need to do this?

Did you get the whole front diff or just the centre? If you got the whole front diff then just swap it in. The GV's which I think Joe is thinking of have a lightly longer LHS inner axle shaft by about 6mm if I remember correctly but apart from that the 26 spline shafts are the same. I didn't think the Vit 2.0 RHS cv's were different to the 1.6 but I haven't really played with them due to my modified front diff.

its the position of the cross shafts in a non grand centre that interferes with the end of the l/h axle. and as for the r/h cv thats why the rd88 air locker has a bigger internal journal to suit said axles.

I have a centre only at this stage, I can get a whole front diff out of a LWB efi front cut. Would I need the cv's out of it or could I use mine?

Just to clarify what vehicle I'm playing with here is a photo.

Ok I have now got the front sorted, thanks to Polar_Bear.

The jap import EFI front cuts are 22 spline!!:bad-words:

The rear I am having drama's trying to pull the axles, I have everything removed & I can't budge the axles.

Are there any tricks to pulling the axles, the vit that I got the rear from was a piece of piss to to remove the axles & now I'm stumped/stuck.

I think I might pay a visit to zooki in the chity & see what they want to charge to change it over as I'm over pulling the thing apart & not being able to change the centre over. It's the 2nd time I've tried to pull the axles & they wont f'ing budge!

Ive ben told;

Unbolt the 4 nuts that hold the axle/brake assenbly to the end of the diff tube.
Disconnect brakeline/handbrake cable

Put the wheel back on with the wheel nuts on loose.

Then use the wheel like its a slide hammer.

Don't know about the advisability of this, seems like it could damage your wheel studs, but its what Ive been told

I've followed the factory workshop manual & was almost pulling the vitara off the axle stands trying to shock the axle out & I still couldn't get any movement out of it!!!

ive been to the point of using a long hammer/ wood splitter on chained to the axle and all sorts of stuff to get my axles out before.

they can be verrrry tight, see if you can borrow a decent slide hammer.

Apply some heat to the area that holds the bearing in place (be wary of too much heat though as it will soften the steel and damage the seal(should replace anyway) and then use a big slide hammer. amybe use a penetrating lubricant when it is warm if it doesnt move, wait a bit and then reheat and try again.

I've got it booked in to have the rear diff centre changed over, I just want to be certain that they will swap straight over?

I know there is the 10 & 12 bolt crown wheel & pinions but is that all that is different?

got the rear swapped in today, new bearings & a bit of heat required.

running the 31's with the 4.6 ratio it was out by 10% 54kph = 60kph road speed, now it's 60kph = 59kph road speed with the 5.1 ratio.

need to see how low range is, but driving on the road it's way zippy. it reminds me when it had the stocker wheels.

thank for all the help, it was a cheap swap in the end thanks to flagstaff hill wreckers & their highly discounted prices!

now where are those lockers at polar_bear, hurry up & finish your coona or I'll be stripping it for the good bits......
