DIY ROOF TOP TENT?

Post by SASS »

Evening all,
Im interested in making myself a roof top tent for my hilux dual cab and was wondering if any one out there has any experience in this or pehaps some plans or sketches I could look at. I've looked everywhere on the net but cant find any info on DIY Tents! Any help would be great!!!

Thats my plan as well. Making a camper trailer (Kitchen/Storage only) and I plan to take the existing sliding bed tray of an old pop top camper, attach it permenantly to a roof rack, get a good dome tent, fix it to the bed tray, with the mattress inside. Get a cover made up to cover it when dismantled. It should work for a fraction of the roof top tent you buy commercially.

thought about using an old single pole touring tent for that but when i pulled it out of the shed i found it had gotten wet and was now stuffed
have made a combined awning/tent but haven't fitted it yet.
the awning can be pulled up and over the roofrack to make a tent for trips away, handy for rainy nights in croc country with the swag on the roof rack.
theres a pic or two from my cape york 2003 trip on my website showing the temporary one i made up there.

Tent option

Post by SASS »

Yes I have also thought of the permanent fixture of an off the shelf tent to the roof racks but i want the ease of pulling into camp and simply lifting the top and crawling in!!!!! (like a caravan pop top)

No Messing Around With Tent Poles and Guide Ropes!!!!!!

Dose any one have any photos of how the lift mechanicles in the off the shlef roof top campers work?

Or has anyone else got any ideas?
