60's axels in a swb 40

Thoughts on 60's axels under a swb 40 anyone done it any major probs other than moving the spring mounts?

if you move the spring perches in on the front diff you have ubolt clearnace issues but a weirdly bent ubolt can fix this

once you get over that there pretty much bolt in the solid brake lines need a bit of massaging to sit properly aswell but nothing major

ive looked into this heaps (lost a few nights scrolling through ih8mud!!!) and the only option really available here is Oz is to notch the pumpkin/housing and get the perch lined up with the chassis and spring mounts. Not much on Ih8mud as it is all too easy and legal to do SOA conversions over there - its easier to do the SOA conversion and use a spaced out perch above the housing to get extra height rather than loosing height if you kept it SUA...

I haven't got to it yet but am hoping to get the notching right and set up the perches in the correct location...

you dont have to notch the housing just grind the crap outta the spring perch so you can weld it on as flat as possible you will lose about 10mm of clearance but thats a loss im willing to take

i have a pair of 60 diffs with perches done for my fj45 sitting in the shed can take pics tomorrow and post up tho im waiting for my new bigger welder so i can reweld them but you can get the idea

Another option is a 60 rear and IFS hubs up front, thats what I've done in mine. Saves mucking about getting the front spring perches done. Though front bearing load is higher, now being the same as a IFS hilux.

cool thanks all for your insight, sounds like it is doable just need to massage the front pumpkin mount with a grinder, what about rotating the diff upwards to reduce driveline angle or is that playing with fire?

do it now as you put the perches on - saves having to cut and turn the knuckles later. keeps the pumpkin and housing orientated the way it should then... helps with oil levels if nothing else...

I went down the same track as hustly 60 rear diff,wich gives you a hand brake in the rear drums, and the ifs hubs on the front.Also used 60 series springs front and back.
