if you think im slow now wait till im in low rang, diffrence between now and when i was a child is the price of my toys....
On a petrol? I wouldn't bother. You have enough power and if that's not enough, put a V8 in, wouldn't be much more expensive than a Safari turbo kit + tuning
But if you really want to, go for it, keeps me entertained
I would spend the money on other stuff that makes it go better offroad, lockers, x-link etc.

My dad had 4.5 petrol 80's for years and IMHO once they had load in them they were nothing special.
Not commenting on whether the safari kit makes sense or not, only that 4.5 petrols don't really have enough power.
Steve.

YES on a petrol (aj) that is what im thinking about.everything is nearly done even now as it is is good and im happy with it.thanks for the replys people.....and as far as the x-link i dont like the idea of them. id just do a radius arm flip.

Sorry for the hijack but the X-link does a different job to the radius arm flip and is very elegant solution to the roll stiffness/bushing bind problem radius arm designs suffer as far as I can see.XXL_45L_CRUISER wrote:..and as far as the x-link i dont like the idea of them. id just do a radius arm flip.
Just my 2c.
Hijack over

one of my mates has a turbo 80ser and it hammers. it wasn't cheap and there was a few hurdles along the way as well. there isn't the parts availability like the nissans either.
the safari kits are shite and thats why they stopped making them. to try and match fuel/air they have a inlet manifold that has a seventh fuel injector in it instead of putting better injectors, pump mods and aftermarket ECU's.
my mate will sell his at the right price. it has a modded auto too.

mate i have a safari kit with the miro fueler and 99% parts and i am looking at fitting it if i find enough time . do it and make the rest of the them envy you.in the safari kit with the extra injectors (2) make a 2 and a half inch cross over pipe and go to the wreckers and get the injector boss and clamp out of a jb injected camira and mount it to the cross over pipe and by a micro fueler from ebay.etc and there is a good start.
email for more info.

got one at work at the moment in a 100# and it's got 160kw at four wheels on only 4 pound of boost. Yep only 4psi! standard injecters
Big job to do it properly with the factory computer still in place but results are impressive.
The manifold and turbo are turbonetics items and everything else was custom including a small front mount.
Absolutely fried the standard brakes so include an upgrade in ya budget.

do you have any pics
I haven't done one for a while but have tuned a couple of Safari setups using unichips and have fitted a couple of custom setups on both Petrol only and duel fuel using Gasresearch. There are a couple of approaches that effect the overall cost and performance. You can do a full aftermarket ecu and injectors, fuel pump etc or go for a patch chip like the unichip or my preference the Haltech, they allow tuning of fuel and timing also giving the ability to run an extra one or two injectors to supply the additional fuel.
I've not seen 160 rwkW from standard injectors, some things are possible like pushing the fuel pressure very high with an FMU although going over 70psi total fuel pressure can make for injectors that blow open or dribble causing poor fuel control and potential engine damage. Most manufacturers run their vehicles between 70 and 80% duty cycle leaving a realistic 20% increase being acheivable from stock.
On my dyno a stock 4.5 80 makes about 80 rwkW. Correctly tuned under power a turbo uses about 15% more fuel than a N/A engine also. A dyno dynamics dyno in shootout mode will show significantly higher readings than mine which is SAE certfied for accuracy.
I'm not discounting fatassgq claim but I wouldn't count on getting that power without more significant modification.
The engines are tough and make over 200 rwkW no worries
Cheers

There was a guy on Toymods awhile back who had one in an old school Celica(TA23,RA23 maybe a RA28), my memory is a little hazy but I think he had a few 2JZ parts fitted up to it. He was making some silly power like 400 RW KW, but it probably had a power band that was far removed from what you'd want in a 4wd.
I will double check the figure tomorrow.
The engine is a later model obviously being a 100# but it has an old style unichip, fuel cut defender, rising rate reg and as stated turbonetics turbo and external gate with fmic.
The reason boost was capped at 4 psi was because of the injecters obviously.
The owner wants to go bigger injectors soon and up the boost a little so when he comes back in I will try and remember to get some pics and a dyno printout.
BTW this is an auto and is used daily as a work vehicle and for towing a 3 tonne trailer!
Everything in the bay had to be insulated on the drivers side ie wiring etc because of the heat from the high mounted turbo. The turbo also has a heat bag on the exhaust housing.

Did you actually put it on the heathcote strip with the trailer on?
we only did it as drag car we run did an auto on the first run there was only 10 cars on the day. so on the last run we asked them can we run it down with the tandem they just lol and said go for it , is a good trailer not shit . it was with 31" inch tires standard gearing and 10 psi boost with dump pipe droped at front door
I recall there was on old issues of 4x4 asutralia or the like that had an article on the 4.5 turbo. Some crazy arab had one up to about 700hp with a turbo and cam ( along with a whole bunch of driveline work to make it last)
I think I still have the mag at home somewhere will see if I can find it.
mmm big turbo petrol donks .. love em .. just cant afford one myself.
