starter not engaging with clevo setup

Post by krazy_4x4 »

hey guys just wondering if anyone has had this problem.... the starter motor not engaging with the fly wheel.... what i have is a 351 clveveland with a delos bell housing and gq 5 speed..

i took it out cause of the solenoid died but after getting f*#ked around for ever just to find out was that and getting it fixed i have forgotten how much it was spaced out DOH!!!

you may ask why is it spaced??? cause if not the fly wheels grinds on the starter motor whilst car is running and i have not found anyone that has a made up spacer or if i have just simply wrong starter motor ( manual or auto lol)

any help would be great

thanx dane

There was a factory spacer on 302/351 clevo on the Manuals trans, flywheel depth must have differed from auto to manual. Last I bought one was some time ago, you could try speed shops, I doubt you'd get joy from Ford.

Cheers

fomoco, rare spares, and gt performance have these but they are pricy at around $60-$70.

I made my own from a piece of 20mm plate, the final space thickness needs to be 9mm to push the starter forward. Any ford with a toploader need to use them

also you can use the mini starter from any xd 6cyl through to bf 6's, just check that the front tail shaft wont knock it off, i needed to add more caster and limit the up travel by 20mm to stop the clash and allow 10mm clearance at the sump otherwise the diff can punch the sump and bend the oil pump and pickup
