Warn Winch problem

Last time i tried to winch myself, the winch started off ok but very quickly struggled to even wind in. Sounded like it was doing it's thing but was moving so slowly it wasn't actually pulling me out. The engine wasn't dieing as I was keeping the revs up. Any ideas on what the problem could be. Someone suggested the battery, but shouldn't the winch get plenty of power while the truck is running?

Could have been the battery as a (decent) winch under heavy load can easily exceed your alternators output.
Could also have been the stator windings partially stuffed or even the brushes.

Time for a full service as it sounds to me like the brake is staying on. I'm not 100% on M10,000 but alot of lowounts the brake can seize up.

how big is your battery and how many amps does your alternator put ot? the battery will only power it for so long before most of the amps start comming from the alternator. and if you have a dual battery system make sure the winch is allways hooked up to the main battery.

when i pulled my XD9000 apart yesterday, the brake was siezed into the drum- took a lot of knocking to get the bitch to release and pop out!

Go and get yourself an Optima Yellow top, they are very good for winching.

Dont problems only happen to non warn winch's .. as per most other threads whenever you mention another brand.

Did the motor on the winch sound different ? (Ie like it was struggling under the load) were you really really stuck ? and the waing was nearing its max pulling power ? and it was simply bogging down under the load ?
When was the last time the winch was serviced ?

Corrosion on the terminals
Also possible that your battery is getting old and is pooing it pants under load.

Lots of potential problems.

I hear this alot but I was lead to believe that lead acid batteries are best for whinching not deep cycles. That's why I have a bloody heavy 700cca lead acid in my sierra and not a lightweight optima.

weight does not equal ability in this case.
The optima is still a lead acid battery, but it uses far higher quality components so does not need massive underperforming plates etc

been using these batteries for years and with no dramas. they don't 'SPILL' when on angles and the life of them even with a fridge plugged in has been awesome. but still, he hasn't given us more details.

Yellow top Optima is a deep cycle high cranking battery. I am no battery guru but I was told to get one when I had winching issues under big loads with my old high crank no amp hour century battery. It works a shit load better now under load.

Hmmnm, yeah I run the big Optima Blue top as a starter/wincher. The problem with the Optimas though, is that although they flow heaps of power that they dont dont have the same capacity of other batteries which are the same size - this is why I dont run one as a 2nd battery for the fridge etc.

start with a new battery then check terminal corosion if all good remove winch,pop end cap off -2bolts and check that the brush springs havent rusted off or siezed up,if all ok get the armeture checked on a growler at auto elecs and check field windings,also check that the common cable connector inside that goes to the a terminal hasnt come loose and has no broken strands
all parts available sometimes cheaper than buying a new motor for it
all lowmount brakes are in the on position untill the shaft turns either way so it disengages
